From $0.17 To $700 Within 7 Months On Medium
7 rules for Medium writers to beat the game of online writing

I received my fourth cash bonus in a row and I’ll show you how you can boost your success on Medium too.
Over the past 7 months, I’ve written around 170 articles on Medium and accumulated more than 17k views on my work.
I started my writing journey at the end of December 2020 with 147 views and $0.17.

Within one month I became Top Writer in ‘Parenting’.
In April, I received my first $500 cash bonus and became one of Medium’s Top 2,000 Writers.
And in the past three months, I’ve become a Top Writer in 5 different categories — ‘Social Media’, ‘Feminism’, ‘Creativity’ and ‘This Happened To Me’.
Within the last 30 days, I got 6,679 views and my earnings increased to around $700.

I Do Believe Writing Online Is a Game
My motto is: If I can do it, you can do it too and ‘beat the game’ of online writing!
I love to share my experience and help other writers on this platform.
That’s the reason I wanted to share 7 tips, tricks, and lessons I’ve learned over the past 7 months in order to help you with your own writing.
Live by these 7 rules and you’ll ‘beat the game’ of publishing on Medium:
- Play the game of online writing consciously. Learn as much as you can about Medium. Stay up to date and share your insights with the community.
2. Dare to write for a pub. If you write for a pub on Medium and your articles get published, it’s an extension of your followers, and therefore you get in front of a much bigger audience. Try Smedian. It’s really easy to submit to a pub.
3. Consistent output is crucial in order to grow your online audience. In order to be taken seriously in your category (Parenting, Feminism… whatever the topic is you’re passionate about) and a leading voice in your niche, you need to be writing and publishing new content frequently.
4. Success depends on how we interact with each other. In times of fake followers and the follow-unfollow-game, it’s not about the follower count Anne Bonfert but about the relationship with your authentic and loyal readers.
On the one hand, it’s about the relationship one has with oneself (for me, writing helps me find my own voice and become clear about what is important to me).
Secondly, it’s about ‘relating’ to interesting other writers on Medium.
There are quite a few of those, would you agree? Michael Burg, MD (AKA Medium Michael Burg)
5. Break the bad habit of not writing (because of ‘Mother’s block’) and build a meaningful writing habit instead. Putting pen to paper (or at least putting fingers to keyboard) makes you more motivated and gets your juices flowing. It gives you the boost to actually continue writing.
Everything we do should be built around taking micro-steps that are too small to fail and together add up to something big — even if it’s only 15 minutes of writing per day.
6. Letting your readers tell you what it is they want to know. The best stories happen in the comments section. That’s why I love to ask my audience questions or offer to ‘ask me anything’ Recently, Jameson Steward, Frank Larkin, or Vidya Sury, Collecting Smiles asked me what was on their mind.
PS: In case you have a question, drop me a line and I’ll answer it in a short form post!
7. Dare to write short form posts too. As Yana Bostongirl said recently about my writing for Tom Fenske’s ‘The Shortform’: short, sweet, and to the point.
I think the best way to continue earning a reader’s loyalty is to direct them from a short piece of content they already find valuable to a longer piece.
PS: Short form posts even can go viral!
The fourth cash bonus in a row is a validation
I really can’t believe it. As usual, I had put my baby to bed and sat down at the dining table to write — until my eyelids droop.
I came across Sophie Rose’s tweet via the new Twitter feature on Medium, which lets you discover your Twitter contacts on Medium.

I thought Sophie's tweet was so authentic and honest I had to retweet it. Only then I realized what it meant. Sophie had sent the following message two hours ago:

I checked my earnings and…. voilà. $500. Amazing!

My biggest takeaway:
It’s all about the community! Thank you all so so much!
Many thanks to Ev Williams and Medium. I’m really grateful for the bonuses.
Check your earnings. Hopefully, all of you can celebrate the cash bonus (one last time)! Floyd Mori Doran Lamb Lorrae G. John Egelkrout Krish Rajesh Vairapandian Terry Mansfield Kristina Segarra Liv Mello Joanna Henderson Yana Bostongirl Burk Roz Warren Vishnu*s Virtues Julia Freeman Anne Bonfert
Moreover, thanks to all my followers and friends on Medium. I really appreciate you. Thanks for making my words part of your day. 😍 🥰 😘
