It is never too late to make new friends, start new projects, or visit different countries we have always wanted to see. Today, more than ever, we can explore our options and make fresh new choices.

Thanks to the internet, we are all connected globally in ways that were inconceivable even a few generations ago.

1. Generation X, born between 1965 and 1980 was the first generation to recognize and benefit from the opportunities the internet provided. They use it to connect with old friends and family socially, to keep in touch, to meet new people, and as an aid to their jobs.

2. They are able to move around more freely and develop new ties on social media, which exposes them to different ideas and lifestyles, sometimes far removed from their parochial, usually more conservative upbringing.

3. The advent of the smartphone( in 1992,) basically a small portable computer, was the tool that made all this possible. Invented in 1992, 82% of Americans have and use their smartphones daily, as well as approximately 7 billion people worldwide, or 85% of the 8 billion people currently alive.

Connections have spread across every level of society in ways their designers never even dreamed of. Time itself became a more malleable concept. People can easily connect 24/7.

Things just keep moving faster and faster, and we have all evolved into different kinds of beings today than The Greatest Generation ever could have imagined in their wildest dreams.

The Baby Boomers, born right after WWII up to the mid-60s, still have a lot of power and influence, but their numbers are dwindling by attrition.

  1. Millennials, or Gen Y, born between 1980 and 1994 grew up with technology and social media as their birthright.

2. It has become an integral part of their everyday life. They use it for not only entertainment but also for forming political opinions.

Technology has opened new doors and introduced all of us to new concepts of social interaction, all fueled by social media.

3. Social media will be the driving force behind the new world that is rapidly evolving. The role of AI in this brave new world is yet to be ascertained.

Gen Z, or those born between 1995–2009, take all this for granted, as well as Gen A, (Alfies) born between 2010–2024.

These last two generations will shape and mold the world we are all living in now. They will question the values, assumptions, and the emotional content, and context, of everything in their own way, in their own time.

  1. They will challenge all the social, sexual, and political truisms of the older generations. They will realize and view the world in a unified way beyond our present comprehension.

2. Beyond even their own comprehension, because they are basically winging it right now, even as their influence and power simultaneously grow ever greater.

3. They are poised on the brink of the greatest social revolution of all time and are basically doing it by on-the-job training. They don’t even know what they don’t know yet. But they will learn.

They have no choice. They have inherited a world that is on the brink of extinction, primarily because of global warming.

They are faced with wars between obscure political ideologies that have no logical relevance to them yet are destroying them and their families.

The dark threat of nuclear annihilation is still hanging over everybody’s heads. There are approximately 13,000 nuclear weapons in the world.

All of these problems must be solved, and the clock is ticking.

Most people in medieval days would probably denounce today’s world as witchcraft and black magic, and from their point of view, it is.

Now some people are perennial travelers, hopscotching across the world, some are wired into working from home, and some just want to have fun.

Nothing wrong with any of that, but time and tide wait for no man. Change is inevitable, and we are about to witness a sea change of unknown proportions globally.

Humans have always been incurable optimists, and that survival trait will become a start to solving all the problems. It will all work out.

We will survive, because we must. We’ll fix what’s broken. We are all connected…
