Summary

NewsBreak has updated its follower policy, reducing the required number of followers for content creators to earn money on the platform.

Abstract

NewsBreak has recently announced a change in its follower policy, lowering the number of followers needed to monetize content from 200 to 100. This change has significant implications for content creators like the author, who now finds themselves closer to meeting the new quota with 15 registered followers out of the required 100, as opposed to the previous 32 out of 200. The author reflects on the impact of this policy shift, expressing initial frustration over the distinction between registered and unregistered followers but ultimately finding humor in the situation. The article also touches on the author's past criticisms of NewsBreak and Quora, their decision to focus on Medium, and the challenges of adapting to constantly changing rules across different writing platforms. Despite the mixed feelings, the author is inclined to continue writing for NewsBreak, optimistic about the potential to earn from local news stories and the reduced follower threshold.

Opinions

  • The author initially felt overwhelmed by the need to manage multiple writing platforms, including Medium, NewsBreak, and Quora.
  • The author was pleasantly surprised by NewsBreak's reduced follower requirement, seeing it as an opportunity to earn money on the platform sooner than expected.
  • There is a sense of skepticism about the motivations behind the policy changes, with the author feeling like a "chew toy" being fought over by different writing platforms.
  • The author perceives a competitive dynamic among writing platforms, each trying to "one up" the others, often at the expense of the writers who have to adapt to new rules.
  • Despite the frustrations, the author is considering refocusing on NewsBreak due to the enjoyment of writing local news stories and the potential for a "decent base pay" under the new rules.
  • The author acknowledges the difficulty of achieving the new follower quota on NewsBreak but remains hopeful about the platform's opportunities.

Fresh News about NewsBreak and Their New Follower Quota!

Is there some kind of behind-the-scenes feud going on between the writing platforms?

I just received an email from NewsBreak, telling me about their new follower policy. Based on what I read, as a NewsBreak creator of content, I now require less followers than I originally was led to believe.

Writers will soon be buzzing on social media about this fresh new change to NewsBreak’s policy.

When I read the news, all I could do was smile, as I considered what this would mean to me and my existing problem of having too few followers on NewsBreak.

With a lower follower quota, I could possibly be earning money over there, sooner than later.

I thought about whether or not I wanted to focus any attention on the site at this time. I had already decided to put a pin in both NewsBreak, and Quora, at least for the remaining days in August.

That decision was made when I realized how thin I’ve been spreading myself between Medium, and these other two sites. Thus far, I can’t decide if it’s been counter productive for me or not.

As some of you may have read, I have had a lot to say about both these sites within the past couple of weeks.

In addition to writing and requesting help with the follower situation on NewsBreak, I also shared some interesting screenshots, related to earning money on Quora.

Once I read the email from NewsBreak, I went to the website to check out my current stats, and see if my 32 followers had managed to increase since I last looked.

Just wait until I tell you what I found.

New Quota and New Rules

The screenshot you see below is what I found when I went to check stats on NewsBreak. The image shows me having 15 out of the now “100” followers that are required.

However, that figure used to show: 32/200. So even though they lowered the quota to 100 followers required, those 100 followers apparently need to be “registered” followers, whereas before, the site didn’t make any distinctions. Followers were only identified as “follower” — period.

So now, I can only assume that 17 of my former NewsBreak followers were not registered, so they no longer count toward my quota amount.

At first, the whole thing really ticked me off, but the more I sat looking at the screen, the less it bothered me. Eventually, all I could do was laugh.

I decided to look at the bright side, which is: Now, instead of needing 168 more followers, I only need 85. I can live with that.

But I’d be lying if I didn’t admit that I’m beginning to feel like a chew toy being tossed around and fought over by a couple of dogs.

That might be a bit much, but I really do feel some kind of way about how all these writing related platforms are constantly revamping their rules, and not necessarily in a way that benefits the writers.

I’m sure it’s clear to more people than me, how all the websites seem to be trying to one up one another. Whatever their motivation, the writers always end up being the ones constantly jumping through the hoops.

Final Thoughts

Will I continue writing and trying to reach NewsBreak’s new follower policy? Probably so. I think I’ll eventually be in a position to earn a decent base pay for the news related stories I plan to write there.

I enjoy finding things going on in my community and writing about it. Those are the kind of stories that don’t do well on Medium.

Since I missed out on the opportunities they offered earlier in the year, with all the sign on bonuses, I figure I’ll stick around and see what happens when I’m able to earn under their new rules.

If you’ve been thinking about writing for NewsBreak, but the 200 follower quota turned you off, maybe this news might make you change your mind.

Then again, 100 followers is really nothing to sneeze at either, not on a site that is no where near as amicable as Medium. I doubt if anyone will be speaking up for anyone over there with less than 100 followers :-(
