Summary

This web content is a personal narrative discussing the author's lifelong love for fresh-baked bread, inspired by their father's profession as a master baker and their own "Favourite Craving" for bread.

Abstract

The text is a heartfelt homage to the simple pleasure of fresh-baked bread, deeply rooted in the author's childhood experiences. The author's father, a master baker, brought home fresh bread and cakes every Friday, which sparked the author's enduring adoration for bread. The narrative includes a warning about the health risks associated with consuming hot bread, as shared by the author's father, who suffered from "Bakers lungs," a painful condition from inhaling flour dust. Despite this, the father's stubbornness and resilience are admired. The piece is also a response to a prompt by "janny's heart" and is part of a series of writings on favorite cravings, with a link provided to another piece titled "AFFOGATO." The author expresses gratitude to Dr. Mehmet Yildiz and the ILLUMINATION-Curated team for featuring their work.

Bread is my mistress

Ready and waiting for me

Eager all the time

Always at my breakfast plate

Desiring you bread darling.

I have adored fresh-baked bread from a very young age. Me Father was a master baker, (steady now) and confectioner, winning competitions when he was young. I know this because he told me so…

He would bring home fresh bread and a few cakes on a Friday. I never ate the cakes, just got stuck into a whole loaf of bread, and I mean a whole loaf of bread.

Hot roast chicken and fresh bread are one of me all-time favourites!

Warning… Hot fresh bread is really not good for you! Let it cool down. Source: Me Dad. He should know he is was a master baker, (steady now.)

Unfortunately for me Dad, around the age of 40, after 20 odd years in the Baking and confectionery trade, contracted “Bakers lungs” a condition where fine flour dust settles in the lungs and makes them go hard, think flour and water and how hard it dry’s!

An extremely painful condition. However, he is stubborn Irish and has managed his condition for forty years!
