Freewriting Friday — What Life is Like with No Internet

Photo by Julien L on Unsplash

I’ve had no internet for 2 whole weeks. A lightning strike fried my modem and router, and it’s taken Optus two weeks to get their act into gear and get a technician out here. I kept onto them but was told repeatedly that a new box would arrive in 1–2 business days.

Finally, I spoke to someone who understood English who told me they don’t send out NBN modems — a technician must visit to set it up. Why wasn’t I informed of this fact on my first contact? I’m tempted to pay only half on my monthly bill, but I know it’s probably not worth the hassle of waiting on the phone like I’ve had to do for the past two weeks!

Enough whingeing! My life has changed by having no internet. My writing has suffered — there’s only so much you can do on a phone — and my sleep has suffered. I have Netflix on a TV in my room — nothing else and I go to sleep to a familiar series every night — usually Friends or Gilmore Girls. So I’ve had to try a variety of other measures to get to sleep — meditation, sporting podcasts, Spotify music, even listening to YouTube videos.

After lots of trial and error, I found the most successful thing putting me to sleep is my son-in-law’s podcast Talking Sports Wearing Shorts. I don’t know if it’s because it’s boring for me, having no real interest in English football or American Gridiron or if it’s his familiar voice that lulls me to sleep. I told my daughter. She thinks it’s hilarious!

Tonight I’m going to watch the new season of Emily in Paris.

Here’s a story I wrote about having no internet. Could I survive?
