Free smiles on Freecycle
A light-hearted interlude

As a subscriber to our local Freecycle communities, I often pass on items we no longer require that may be useful to others.
If you’re not familiar with it, Freecycle is a grassroots and non-profit charity for people to give and receive ‘stuff’, free of charge, in their own communities.
The idea’s simple. Rather than discard objects when you no longer need them or send them to a landfill, they can be reused or upcycled. It’s a great initiative.
In the past, we’ve given away fridges, a freezer, a cooker, carpets, and bicycles, for example.
Occasionally, you can also pick up some interesting discarded items for up-cycling projects which is a hobby I’m cultivating. Last year, I restored an old table and a chair giving them a new lease of life.
The table turned out so well, my wife even allowed it into the house.
One of the other things I enjoy about the daily posts though is the variety of fascinating niff-naff and trivia that often prompts an unintended chuckle. I’ve cobbled together a few of my favourites:
- Ant farm
- Basket Ball Used
- Toe bar
- Wooden ladder — Missing rungs
- Wall hanging bears
- Wooden one-and-a-half size bed. No mattress
- Horse manure. Good condition
- Moving storage boxes
- Large reindeer tin — Empty (N.B. posted week before Christmas)
- Wax candle holder
Anyway, they made me smile.
Let me know if you come across any others that we could add to the list.
It helps when you read
Every word read on my Medium account during 2022 is going to help someone. All money raised will go to the following registered charities:
Children with Cancer UK — Helping children and young people with cancer Young Gloucestershire — Supporting disadvantaged young people facing challenges in their lives The Big Yellow Bus Project — Shelter and support for the homeless
It’s a small gesture and it’s not going to change the world, but if it helps one person, it’s worth it.
