WRITING PROMPT RESPONSE

Free Entry to a Castle

A writing prompt response to A Taste For Life’s Prompt- “ Tower on a Castle Wall”

On our way to Morocco, back in January of 2020, we had a one-night layover in London, England. Seeing that we were jetlagged and still on North American time, we awoke at about 5:00 am, ready to take on the city. We had until about 12:00 pm before we had to head back to Gatwick airport for our 2:00 pm flight, to continue on with the next leg of our journey to Tangier.

By 6:00 am we had joined the commuters heading into the city on the train and arrived in downtown London at daybreak. It was a stunning hour to witness the sun coming up and the city coming to life.

Knowing that we didn’t have much time in the city, we weren’t keen on spending a lot of money to go into a major attraction, and just thought we would wander around for a few hours, take some pictures, and have some breakfast.

At least, that was the plan until we made our way across the bridge and happened upon a back gate to the Tower of London. A guard at the gate, who shall remain nameless, saw us and started chatting with us. He had the usual questions;

Where are you from?

What are you doing in London?

We were there with our friend John, also from Canada, and we were traveling together to Morocco. The guard started telling us that he had been stationed in Canada with the army at one point. When John told him he was part of the army for many years, they had a few stories to share. One thing led to the other, and the man signed us up for a free entry when the gates would open to visitors.

He wrote our names on a list, then told us to come back at 9:00 when it opened. If he wasn’t there, we simply had to tell the guard on duty that we were this man's guests, and that our names were on the list.

We went and found breakfast in a really cool pub on a corner, then made our way back to the Tower of London’s back gate. As promised, the new guard looked up our names, and let us in. I think we saved thirty pounds each! Plus of course, we wouldn’t have bothered in the first place, because of the reasons that I laid out earlier.

All in all, it was a really cool experience and we even got to see the Crown Jewels which are stored there! Too bad we couldn’t take photos of those!
