Four Things I Have Learned From Our Dog
Meet Sammie

About three years ago, we brought home Sammie. A rescue from a county over. We fell in love with him the moment we set him loose in the clinic’s yard. I say ‘we’ because my wife and kids were there when I said, “I think he’ll fit in nicely,” in a ‘can we keep him?’ tone.
Idle love is still love
The belly and butt scratches, the pats on the head, the ‘who’s the good boy?’ as you walk by on your way to do something else may seem like nothing, but it means the world to others. I’m not suggesting you belly or butt scratch your loved ones, your significant other, maybe.
People can really suck
Maybe a year ago, I woke up from a nap to yelling. By the time I got to the living room, my wife was on the couch, visibly upset. ‘From now on, Sammie does not go out by himself.’
She told me she was sitting on the porch while Sammie played and lounged in the front yard. Our son had told us that a lady had previously yelled at Sammie for barking. Low and behold, the same lady walked by the house and Sammie began barking. The lady yelled at the dog to shut up and swore at it. Walking on the sidewalk, it is difficult to see onto the porch, especially to see if there is someone sitting on it. Not sure it would have mattered in this case, but my wife said something to the extent of ‘sorry, he’s a dog, haha.’ The lady yelled at my wife, saying ‘control your dog, everyone hates your dog, They wish it was dead.’
We reported the incident to the sheriff’s department and called the city hall to see if there have been any complaints. None. We put up a security camera.
He’s still alive, BTW.
Walks. Am I right?
This is one ‘excuse’ for getting a dog that came true.
I have always understood the importance of exercise, but run from it the older I become. Nothing is more important to our dog than taking a walk. Maybe his ball. Okay and maybe cuddling with mama.
He also gets us outside and moving.
Lounging is necessary
Just like exercise, our doggo likes to lounge. What should we expect? He plays hard, and he rests hard. He taught me you need to take some downtime for yourself from time to time.
