Four Quick Stories about a Prosperity Doctrine Church
Why in the world did I put up with this nonsense?
Era: 1990s
I was dating a waitress at the steakhouse where we worked. She got really sick. She had visited New Life Church once, and when the illness prevented her from attending the following Sunday, they called to see if she was OK. When she explained she was sick, they sent someone to her house to pray and give her a hundred bucks. I was SO impressed and started going with her.
One Sunday after the service at New Life, I was walking alone to my car. A dozen feet behind me, there was a mother loudly scolding her daughter for becoming a waitress. The mother was sure the young woman was ruining her life. As I opened the door to my Mercedes, the mother said to the daughter, “Look, there’s someone your age who’s obviously successful.” The woman then asked me what I did for a living. With a big grin and looking at the daughter, I said, “I’m a waiter.” The mama growled.
One Sunday, I came in late to New Life church. My car wouldn’t start so I had to find someone to give me a boost. As I entered, the pastor shouted, “You! what’s your name?” I answered. He then began to berate me while I stood there, using me to preach how disrespectful I and others were about the church. He shouted, “If I were your boss, you’d be fired.” Sadly, I did not give him the finger and shout, “I quit!” (One of my lifetime regrets.) I had suffered so much church abuse by then that I just shrank and slid into a pew.
One night, mama wanted to dance at Hojons, the local gay club. So we dressed in our best disco garb and went. As we approached the bar, members of New Life (MY CHURCH!) were out front with hate signs and screaming at us, “faggots” “sissy boys,” and “you’ll rot in hell!” They thought my mom was a drag queen. I started screaming back at them that not only did I go to their church, I was there with my mom! I was horrified. So I finally quit New Life, and Hojons became my church.
I’m an author, artist, and advocate who is also a trans woman. I used to be an attorney and a pastor…it’s a long story. Please follow me for details and consider buying me a beverage. It would be awesome if you bought my book. Love, Sophia
