Formatting Title and Subtitle Made Simple
A step-by-step guide with images
Improperly formatted titles and subtitles are this editor’s pet peeve. I’ve decided to take action instead of silently cursing each time I see a story without properly formatted titles and subtitles. Afterall, I was recently a newbie, feeling like a dummy as I fumbled around the platform figuring out formatting myself.
The following how-to guide is so simple any writer who cares enough to try can do it. Share your successful endeavors and remember — you can edit past stories with your new-and-improved skills to kick them up a notch!

HOW-TO-TORIAL
- After formatting your main title with the large “T” in the toolbox bar, highlight the text you want for your subtitle, as shown in #1 above.
- Select the small “T” in the toolbox bar.
- Ensure your title in is title case, with proper capitalization, and your subtitle is in sentence case without punctuation.
That’s it! Your subtitle will now appear as shown in #2 above, as gray text beneath the main title.

IMPORTANT NOTE
If you do not properly format your title and subtitle as directed in “Formatting Title And Subtitle Made Simple” the platform robots will automatically choose text to display in place of a subtitle. This text will be visible as your subtitle when you share story links on social media, when stories are published and added to your Medium profile page, and within Medium publications such as MuddyUm.
The robots often display the first sentence of your main body or first line of your poem — for better or worse. Don’t trust a robot with this important task! Take control and ensure the subtitle appeals to humans who may actually want to read your work.
The following examples show the good, the bad and the ugly.
