For Writers Who Don’t Always Feel Like Writing

You don’t have to write everyday and that’s okay.

When I returned to Medium, I was ready to take over and push out at least one article a day. That’s what the experts deemed top writers and those earning thousands of dollars each month said to do. It would only be a few short days on the platform before remembering how unsustainable this is. So, I eased back into a pace that works for me, and I give myself grace when I have nothing to write.

I’ve always considered myself an inspired writer. I have weeks, months even, where the words just flow and appear out of thin air. However, more times than not, the words aren’t there, or if they are, they seem congested and unable to find their exit from within.

After running my blog for five years, facing consistent writer’s blocks was a battle. From the outside looking in, it seemed like I was dropping the ball and neglecting my audience.

From my perspective, I struggled to put pen to paper, knowing that if I didn’t like what I managed to write, others certainly wouldn’t.

Having spent the past few months on Medium, I see writers advising others to write until they have nothing less to give. Write when you’re tired. Write when you’re sick. Write when you’re dreading it. Yes, I understand the importance of writing often because it helps us develop and build our craft, but at what expense?

Let this be your sign that it’s okay to step back.

It’s okay not to be so driven by producing content that it no longer feels fun or like a passion. It’s okay not to push yourself to write when you’d rather be doing something else. It’s okay to find balance in a busy world that tells us we’re not allowed a break now and then.

I want to be more intentional about my writing this year. It’s so many projects I have swirling around in my mind. I want to become more established as a writer and freelancer. I know this will require me carving out time in my schedule to get to business, but I won’t push myself to the point of exhaustion. Some things are just non-negotiable for me.
