For these 5 reasons, I ordered an Apple Watch Ultra 2

Why I upgrade from an Apple Watch Series 7

The Apple Watch Ultra 2 comes with minimal new features compared to the original Apple Watch Ultra (AWU) from last year. However, here in Germany, the AWU2 is a big deal since it dropped in price considering the MSRP. Even now, the original AWU is only 100€ (106 USD) below the MSRP of the AWU2.

I’ve been rocking the Apple Watch Series 7 for 2 years now daily and considering the marginal, but in my perspective significant new features, the AWU2 is a great deal for 5 major reasons. Without further ado, let‘s get into it.

Reason #1: Battery life

The regular Apple Watch models are considered one-day devices concerning battery life. My Series 7 got me throughout the day without any problems, I barely had any fear of running out of battery. Occasionally, I was able to get 2 days of use out of the Series 7, but for most days there is not enough juice left to get me through another full day without charging the watch at night.

For the AWU2, Apple claims 36 hours of battery life like for the original AWU — and this is no overstatement as I learned in the plethora of reviews that I watched on YouTube. I‘m pretty confident that I get at least 3, maybe 4 days of use with a single charge.

Having a larger battery would give me considerable peace of mind and would most probably make the charging puck redundant in the luggage for a short business trip.

Reason #2: Durability

I’m concerned to keep my devices in the best possible condition. Therefore, I‘m wearing the Series 7 always with a protective case — which somehow destroys the aesthetics of the Apple Watch.

However, it has protected my watch from significant damage a few times. I remember one incident where a large and heavy piece of luggage fell off the roof box of my car — and directly impacted my wrist and my Apple Watch which completely cracked the case. I don‘t want to think about what would have happened to the Apple Watch‘s display.

By no means do I expect the AWU2 to be indestructible, it is not. But what I saw from the reviews, the AWU and AWU2 are durable enough to be worn without a case considering everyday use. I‘m really looking forward to admiring the beautiful design of the watch without any case — which is a perfect transition to the third reason.

Reason #3: Design

The titanium bodies of the AWU and the AWU2 look beautiful. Although it is considerably thicker and chunkier than the Series 7, I’m sold to the design of this product. I‘m also very keen to experience a slightly larger display with straight edges. I never liked the rounded edges of the Series 7. What I‘m not quite sure about is the color of the action button — the International Orange screams a little bit too much for my liking judging from the pictures and videos I‘ve seen.

Reason #4: The action button

You can‘t imagine how I‘m looking forward to this button. For features I use regularly (e.g., starting a cycling training), it will make endless scrolling through the app library or frustration with Siri commands redundant. Setting waypoints in unknown locations or triggering certain shortcuts are also features I will definitely test. I‘m excited about the possibilities this button offers.

Reason #5: Software features enabled by the S9 SiP

The S9 SiP in the Series 9 and the AWU2 is the reason for most of the new features. It enables the double-tap feature and on-device processing of Siri commands. I‘ve used the double-tap accessibility feature available on my Series 7 daily. But it does not always work reliably. As I heard from initial reviews, the reliability of this feature was improved with the new models. I‘m excited for this feature to be released later this year to implement it even more in the operation of the Apple Watch.

Siri on the Apple Watch is also a daily companion of mine since I use it to generate tons of reminders by voice. This is a very convenient and frictionless process — if you have a proper connection. Unfortunately, I end up frustrated over having poor connection or long processing times. I‘m very confident that this feature will also be an enrichment in my user experience.

My final thoughts

The AWU2 will certainly be an upgrade with no buyer’s remorse. Although the upgrades over the original AWU, it makes no sense for me to consider buying the previous AWU. I’m looking forward to testing all the new features this watch offers over my current Series 7. It will be delivered within the next few days. Stay tuned for future articles on my experiences with the AWU2!
