For The Record, All Blacks Don’t Look Alike

Everyone in the same race don’t look alike.

Many of us work hard, so we like to reward and/or gift ourselves every so often. It may be in the form of clothing, fragrance, dining, or a weekend getaway. In this particular instance, I opted for new clothing.

Being that I’m a particular shopper, I often prefer to shop alone, as I like to spend time trying on clothes, shoes, and hats, to ensure there’s a good fit and that it complements me overall. On this particular day, I found some good items and was in a good mood.

After spending much time shopping, it was dark outside. As I exited a store, I held the door for a lady, who is Caucasian, as she was exiting, as well. We both were walking in the same direction down the street, and started to talk. After a few minutes of talking, we heard a police siren, then a bright light flashed on us.

This all happened on a main thoroughfare, so there was a lot of traffic. The police officer asked us both to stop. Then, he particularly asked me to stay in place, and informed the woman if she wasn’t with me she can leave.

At this time, I’m wondering what is going on, as well as others who are being held up in traffic, because this officer has stopped traffic for this incident. This all took place in front of a high-end store that I hadn’t been in on this particular day.

Surprisingly, another officer drove up and quickly communicated with the officer that asked me to stay in place. After having me stand in place for about a minute, this officer tells me I can leave, as they now “have the person they were looking for”.

Given the inconvenience and embarrassment, I was furious at this point. To randomly be stopped on the street by a police officer, with a bright light shining in my face at night because this officer thought I look like a suspect they were in search of, is enough to make anyone furious.

Without any hesitation, I rushed to my car and drove to the police station of this municipality. I requested to speak to the police chief. When asked for the reason why I wanted to talk with the chief, I simply stated, “I want to inform the chief that one of his or her officers harassed me for no reason”.

Usually, I’m easygoing and try to remain peaceful, but this situation made me upset. It may have been wrong for me to drive to the police station to complain, but I wanted my voice heard and didn’t want another situation like this to happen again to another innocent person.

That suspect had just stolen an expensive purse from that high-end store and ran out of the store. I’m assuming the store associate just gave a brief description of a Black man in a black jacket.

Well, all Blacks don’t look the same. It was a coincidence that I happened to have on a black jacket at that time, and I’m a Black man that was walking near that store. The operative word “walking”, not running near that store.

I hate that situation happened, but it shows how many are falsely accused. I’m all for diversity, and I’m also for fairness. Hopefully, through prayer, proper training and more diverse interactions, we all will become more respectful and tolerant toward others.
