For the Love of Tea!
“You’re my cup of tea.”
When Dad was alive, anytime you served him a meal, he would request tea afterward. It did not matter if it was breakfast, lunch, or dinner. The brand or the flavor didn’t also matter. Just serve his goddamn tea.
I didn’t get it, and I wasn’t remotely interested. Drinking water was just fine. They could drink all the tea in the pantry and I would not miss a thing.
Fast forward to adulthood. I was 37 and my metabolism had slowed down. I would eat a meal and the food would take forever to digest. It was rather uncomfortable. I was a foodie, but it reduced my frequency of consumption.
I am not sure how I discovered ginger tea. One day, I found this brand that paired well with lemon. I made a cup with two tea bags. Viola. All that bloatedness after meals disappeared. I tried it again and again and many times; I got a similar result. I became hooked.
Unlike my dad, I was brand specific. Since my goal was to ease digestion and nothing else, I noticed it wasn’t all the brands that had that effect. Whenever I went grocery shopping and I found my preferred brand, I would clear the shelf. I could buy 20 packs or more.
If I went to a function, a restaurant, or was on a flight, anytime they offered me tea, I would request ginger tea. Many times, they wouldn’t have and I would opt for the next best option; black tea. That helped with digestion, but nothing quite compared to ginger tea.
It was at this point it suddenly dawned on me; Dad's craving for tea might just be his way of easing digestion. That might explain his dedication. I never thought to ask, but seeing my dedication now, I know better.
My current realities.
Whenever I eat out, especially buffet style, I have bags of ginger tea in my handbag. While flying, I now accept the offer to drink black tea. I have also jumped on the green tea bandwagon. It’s not an everyday tea. It’s tea when my body is raging with inflammation.
Water is still my first love when I am bloated. If it doesn’t budge, I reach out for ginger tea.
