For Poets Who Like Highlights
Extra space limits possibilities
Today I wanted to highlight a stanza of poetry here on Medium, but the way the poetry was arranged wouldn’t let me.
After some testing I figured out the problem: Each line of the stanza was its own paragraph.
As far as I can tell, you can highlight only one paragraph at a time. If you select two paragraphs, the highlight toolbar won’t show up.
The remedy for poetry is what many have already advocated. Instead of hitting Enter after each line, use Shift+Enter as along as you’re in the same stanza. Then use Enter at the end of a stanza.
The poem looks better without the extra spacing, of course, but it also allows readers to highlight a whole stanza because it’s now a single paragraph.
