You Are Fine The Way You Are
For One Day Let’s Stop Improving
The astonishing simplicity of being here now.
Considering what we have been through in these disappointing times I think we are all due for a pause. We, as a species, deserve to cut ourselves some slack.
Over the last 3 weeks, I have started a dozen different posts, and they are still in drafts. I felt bad about it for a few days. I recognized a feeling of anxiety that used to creep into my life and slowly paralyze me from all reasonable decision making.
I decided to at least make an effort to notate my brief stint of reclusive behavior so I can learn from it… or something.
The thing is… topics in the world got heavy- fast. Didn’t they?
I jumped around between topics that seemed to be on our minds — as a species.
- pandemic
- racism
- equality
- justice
- economic failure
- mental illness
- family
- education
- habits
- cultural shifts
- monetary changes
- banking vs cryptocurrency
With these heavy subjects, there are many ways to approach this life as a writer. But I keep starting and not finishing. I feel I said all I could on the important things we have on our minds, for the time being.
It became difficult to be heard and seen in the crowd of angry shouts and discomforting headlines.
I am mostly optimistic about the world. I am ready to give myself a free pass to be what I am — without guilt. I am human, and I don’t always want to be on a quest for improvement.
I like myself at the moment. Do I really need to be ever-growing and perpetually upgrading my soul?
I think not.
Laziness is not always a bad thing. In fact, some see laziness as a precursor to marvelous things.
“Laziness is seldom an absolute quality, like nearsightedness or flat feet or a tendency to have hang-nails, but is relative to one factor- interest. If a boy is lazy he isn’t hopeless; he just hasn’t yet become interested in anything. If a man is lazy he has not yet found his work.” Donald A. Laird, 1934
Be Here Now.
Taking in all of the chaos of today’s world, I think it is fair and due that we all stop once in a while to chill. Even if we are stuck in a rut — it doesn’t help to beat yourself up over your “stuckness”. Just chill.
I vow to cherish the lull. The downtime. The naps. The mess. The glorious lazy hours spent playing mindless games. The unmade bed. The scruffy household. The sleeping in.
Embracing this weird new world is going to involve a series of adjustments. We are used to facing challenges day in and day out without rest between. Sometimes it is just too much to always be moving forward. With a limited number of rotations around the bright, burning sun, it is time to try a different pace for a day.
Let’s take a breath. Let’s live. Slowly. Just one day.
I challenge you to give yourself a free pass today.
Today you are fine the way you are.
Today you don’t need to seek more.
Today you can accept what is.
Be here now.
Cheers.
