Food Donation at a Local Shelter: My Experience

Food Drive | Feeding Families | Share the Blessings

We often pray to God for things that we either lack or desire more of. Our desires seem endless, with each prayer focused on our well-being and the fulfillment of something we perceive as missing from our lives. Two particular experiences profoundly impacted me.

It was a serene morning when I visited the temple to offer my prayers. As I was leaving, I noticed the temple arranging a food donation event. Individuals could either donate or volunteer for this cause. I felt compelled to participate.

The items available for donation: spaghetti and sauce, salad and dressing, French bread and butter, forks, napkins, cups, bananas, and milk with cookies. I chose to contribute bananas and milk while also signing up to volunteer.

Little did I know that this decision would reshape my outlook on life.

Although we often hear stories of people facing hardships, witnessing it firsthand is an entirely different experience. It is impossible to fully comprehend the pain others endure and the magnitude of gratitude we should hold for what we have.

The food donation event was scheduled to begin at 4:00 pm. Wanting to ensure everything was prepared, we arrived early at 3:00 pm. Anticipating the presence of children, I brought along chocolates, mindful of potential allergies. I resolved to offer a chocolate to a child only after obtaining their parent’s consent.

At approximately 3:45 pm, people began to form a line. We were fully prepared with all the food items. I stationed myself behind the salad counter, ready to serve. As the clock struck 4:00 pm, the food distribution commenced. People started arriving, and we began serving them. Although I felt joyous in serving, I didn’t fully grasp the significance of our actions.

After a while, I noticed a man with tears in his eyes. It was evident he had likely gone without food for days. After filling his plate with spaghetti and sauce, he approached the salad counter and

uttered these words: You folks don’t realize what this means to us! Going to bed hungry is the worst feeling imaginable. Today, I’m overjoyed to have this plate of food.

Upon receiving his cookies and milk, he sat down, said his prayers, and began eating. There was a smile on his face. I couldn’t help but watch him. His expression resembled that of someone who had just won the lottery. Witnessing his happiness brought tears to my eyes.

It made me ponder, what truly makes a person content in this world? Basic necessities like food, clothing, shelter, and a loving family seem more than sufficient. Yet, we often chase after materialistic desires in pursuit of happiness. But in that moment, observing him, he appeared to be the happiest person alive. That smile spoke volumes about the simple joy of having a meal.

People continued to come until 6:00 pm. Upon seeing the children, I remembered the chocolates I had brought and began distributing them after obtaining permission from their parents. Among the attendees, one pair of siblings caught my attention. The elder brother was 8 years old, and his younger sister was 4.

The boy politely asked me: Can I have two Hershey’s chocolates? One for me and one for my sister?

I replied: Yes, of course.

He accepted the chocolate from me, carefully unwrapped it, and handed it to his sister. After she finished hers, he savored his own chocolate. Intrigued by his caring nature, I asked his mother about it.

She replied: Yes, he is very protective of his sister. She means the world to him. Every night, he ensures she is tucked in comfortably before he goes to sleep. He loves her dearly.

Her words left me deeply moved. It was a profound display of pure, unconditional love — the kind that transcends wealth or poverty. It reminded me that love is love, regardless of circumstances.

My experience at the food donation event left a permanent mark on my heart and mind. It was a reminder of the importance of empathy, compassion, and gratitude in our lives. I was reminded that true happiness often lies in the simplicity of life’s basic necessities and in the bonds of love and care we share with one another. The selfless actions of the young boy, who prioritized his sister’s happiness and comfort, exemplified the beauty of unconditional love.

This experience taught me that while our desires may be endless, it is our ability to extend a helping hand, to show kindness, and to cherish the relationships that truly enrich our lives. As I reflect on this journey, I am filled with a renewed sense of purpose — to continue spreading love and kindness wherever I go.
