After months of rumor and speculation, presumptive Presidential Candidate Joe Biden has announced Kamala Harris as his 2020 running mate. Given the divided nature of the United States at this time, I figured the attacks against whomever Joe Biden tapped would arrive with ferocity. I decided to scrape the Twitter feed for references to Kamala.

I would have expected ‘nasty’ to make a prominent appearance on the word cloud. (RT @kdlang: I’m with nasty.)

I find the most interesting aspects of that visualization contain the lower frequency words that are smaller and around the edges.

“Upcoming nickname”? That has some intrigue. Ah, yes. It is Randy Rainbow. (RT @RandyRainbow: BREAKING: Donald Trump to soon announce which of Kamala’s ethnicities he plans to offend in upcoming nickname)

“Race hoax”? That one sent me down a rabbit hole into a dark world of incorrect ‘facts’ circulating on the web. I crawled my way back out and decided to check the tweet directly. (RT @ChuckCallesto: REMEMBER WHEN Kamala Harris claimed that Jussie Smollett’s race hoax was a “MODERN DAY LYNCHING?.”)

There is a considerable number of opinions about Kamala’s ethnicity. What she is, what she isn’t. I hadn’t put that much thought into her ethnicity. I feel that we are going to be hearing some questionable interpretations in the months to come.

How are Tweeters Feeling?

I ran a sentiment analysis on different subsamples of the population. The results were consistent.

Positive tweets: 41 % Negative tweets: 19 % Neutral tweets: 39 %

I am pleasantly surprised that the percentage of negative tweets was under 20%. I would have guessed at least 40% based on my recent Facebook feeds.

Overall, I was pleased to see the percentage of positive tweets today. It will be interesting to revisit this analysis next week and the week after to see how the sentiment changes over time.
