Misadventures In Discord, Part 3

You might have seen my call to action from yesterday to help Sturg. This is not the same thing. There is a bit off crossover, but the aim for this favor is very different.

This favor could turn around to help you.

That’s the hope, anyway. See, Philip S. Naudus has been working for nearly two years now on an amazing Koala engine app. The engine searched differently than Google or Bing does — instead of returning clickable results to visit websites, it provided you with a prompt like this:

One prompt I wrote a flash fiction from.

Despite my excitement to use the engine, it didn’t seem to catch on. And, because I’m flighty, even I fell out of the habit of using it.

It started out as Koala Quest, but there was a second version called Koala Quill. Version Two tracked the user’s writing in drafts on the app itself in an attempt to help people write more consistently. It gave tokens and was scheduled to upgrade into a game-like format. You could monitor your progress through the calendar, too. I used to write on the app and copy/paste into Medium’s editor for the final edit — it was super helpful! But again, it didn’t catch on.

What’s This To Do With Discord???

In Philip’s preparation for round three, he contacted me last week to ask my thoughts on writer’s block. What helps a writer stay engaged and active on a writing app? And I gave the best answers I could, but wondered if there was something more that could be done. I am, after all, only one person…

Oh, right! I have a Discord server! They have something for that, don’t they?

I made forums! The first one was for Philip’s focus — we’re hoping for writer discussion to help Philip hammer out the details of what writers are looking for that his app might provide. The second was for The Sturg. Well, technically it was for podcast topics, and it’s gated to Monster Cousins and above.

(Want to be a Monster Cousin? It’s not hard — just talk more with me on the server, email, Substack, Medium, etc. Cousins are people I can identify in a list of names. They built a friendship with me, and so are honorary Cousins in the Monster Family.)

Want To Know How To Create A Forum?

Let’s say you’ve got your own server — how does a forum work? It’s just like creating any other channel, but a forum instead. Click/press the + that you’d normally use for a text or voice channel, and select forum instead. Boom. Done.

Forums seem available to any server, too, unlike other channel formats (looking at you, ‘stage’ channel). Each conversation is its own little bubble, and hangs outside the forum channel’s main page for easy access.
