Fog Bow

The Glowing Rainbow

Two golden feet a heavenly arch apart Unmoved? Not an option

Before moving to Crescent City, California, I did not even know that fog bows existed. Ever seen one? It’s a white, almost glowing rainbow, formed not by the sun striking the rain, but the sun striking fog (at just the right angle).

The first time I saw one I was “this” (thumb and index finger an inch apart) close to taking it as a sign from God or some other friendly deity or other. Oh my, what about that. But when another walker passed me without giving the fog bow a second glance, I realized that he had seen them before and that this was most likely not a sign from God.

Oh, well.

Point is, though, that at seventy I’d come across a natural phenomenon I had never heard of before, much less seen. What else have I missed? one wonders.
