Focus on Your Dreams, Not Your Fears

The journey from distraction to achievement…

If you’ve been looking for ways to improve your concentration, you’re in the same boat as many others. It seems the concept of focus has gone through a transformation in the 21st century, with a myriad of distractions making it a challenge to focus on a single task. I can certainly say I have experienced these struggles.

I often feared that I wouldn’t make my self-imposed goal of writing 12 articles a month while working a day job. I needed to find a way to get focused in order to achieve these dreams and goals going forward.

There was a time when I couldn’t maintain my focus on work for more than 10 minutes. I would catch myself checking my Instagram or Facebook instead of completing my task at hand.

This was before I decided to master the art of focus.

There were some essential steps to elevate my focus.

Before trying to enhance my focus, I had to evaluate my relationship with it. It’s like refueling my car at a gas station. If I don’t know how much fuel I have left, how do I know how much to add?

I should be able to look back 2–3 days and analyze my activities, whether in studying or working. Being alert, meeting daily work goals, and taking regular breaks are signs of solid mental focus. If I was unclear about these, I needed to track my activities in a journal.

One of the most challenging aspects of improving focus is eliminating distractions. About 90% of distractions were in my surroundings. I reached out to check my phone frequently. I needed to break that habit. My goal was to focus, so leaving my phone behind was my lifesaver.

There can be other distractions like construction noise from a nearby area. I couldn’t stop those, but I used earplugs to minimize the disturbing noise.

Then there are internal distractions like worries, fatigue, or simply a lack of motivation. These can be more challenging to handle than the external ones. Mindfulness was the key to this.

When I say I couldn’t focus, it means my mind wanders while my body remains in place. Mindfulness is the practice of uniting my mind and body — this is often achieved through meditation. This has made it easier to become more aware of my surroundings and makes it easier to align my mind and body.

I had to allocate time during my day to practice mindfulness. It took patience, but with persistence, I started to see results.

I also minimized multitasking. I’m convinced that not everyone is suited for it. I focus on completing tasks one at a time. If I have a busy day ahead, I break the day’s tasks into a list, tackle them individually, without distractions, and check them off one by one. I have noticed improvement in my focus, as my mind isn’t overwhelmed with simultaneous tasks.

I’ve also found that taking short breaks between tasks is healthier than tackling everything at once. A ten-minute break to go for a walk and get some fresh air makes a difference in rekindling my focus.

Lately, I’ve incorporated brain-boosting foods like nuts, seeds, berries and fatty fish into my meals. Since 60% of the human brain is composed of fat and a lot of us are on low-fat diets, our focus may be suffering.

I can certainly say that I’m amazed at the immense power of my focus when I conquer each task at hand!

By focusing on my dreams, and not my fears, I’ve improved my life!
