Focus on the Sun and a Magic Airplane

A Shapeshifting Story

Jane hears him before she sees him. Heavy grumbling fills the air.

“Do you hear him, Ronald?”

He nods, his strawberry ice cream dripping into the open picnic basket.

Sitting on the grass of the Maasduinen river dunes, Jane stares to the tree border with Germany. The silver bird appears. Noisy and impressive against the blue background.

“Not too high, bird,” says Jane. “The sun has scorched lesser gods.”

A few bright rays. As soon as her eyes refocus, the impossible happens. The airplane takes a nosedive. Low… lower… lower…

She moans. This cannot be, impossible, unimaginable!

“Bird, go higher, don’t be afraid of the sun. I was only joking,” begs Jane.

The colossus vanishes behind a dune.

Jane holds Ronald firmly. She squeezes her eyes shut to hold the horrible images at bay. Thundering noise. Flames. Exploding engines and the smell of burning human flesh.

It’s quiet. Quieter than quiet.

Apart from some whispering birches.

Jane carefully lifts her head. A bird of prey rises from behind the dune. In its claws dangles a broken rabbit.

Ronald moans. “You hurt me, mum.”

Jane shakes her head. Where has the plane gone? How did the bird of prey get here? Her brain works overtime until the little man brings her back to the here and now.

“Mum, can I have new ice cream?”

She looks into his naughty blue eyes and laughs relieved.

“Of course, darling, every miracle deserves ice cream.”

Thank you, Mike, for adding your wise energy to my Maasduinen adventures.
