The Mindset Shift That Made It 10x Easier To Achieve My Goals

A proven strategy for succeeding in the 21st century.

I used to think that it was impossible to become a professional writer. Honestly, I thought it would never happen. But over the last 12 months, I’ve managed to create a full-time income doing something I genuinely love.

How? I broke down my goal into daily habits and then stayed consistent over a long period of time. Like the author, Steven Pressfield once wrote:

“The most important thing about art is to work. Nothing else matters except sitting down every day and trying.”

If a dude from a small British village can do it, then so can you. Without even knowing you, I can tell you’re destined to achieve great things in every aspect of your life.

The best way to start creating the future you desire? Focus on the process, instead of the outcome.

Here’s how.

Break Down Your Big Goals Into Small Habits.

Chances are, you have a dream in your mind that you want to achieve. But for one reason or another, you have no idea how to begin the process of making it a reality.

Identify the habits that will eventually enable you to reach your goal. For example, if you want to be a successful writer, publishing a new article every day is certainly an excellent place to start. Then, implement those habits into your daily routine.

Make A Little Bit Of Progress Each Day.

Utilizing compound interest is a superpower. Because when you get one step closer towards your goals each day, you’ll inevitably create a much better life within a short amount of time.

Since I first adopted this mindset, I’ve found that it’s much easier to make progress in my career as a professional writer.

Put one foot in front of the other. That’s all that matters.

Constantly Learn From People You Admire.

Spend time with people that inspire you to become your best self. Learn from people that have experience in your specific field. For example, if you want to be an athlete, pay attention to the habits and mindset of Olympic gold medalists. The Greek philosopher, Epictetus said it best:

“The key is to keep company only with people who uplift you, whose presence calls forth your best.”

If someone else has achieved your goal, it’s certainly possible that you can, too. All you need to do is implement actions that increase the probability of making your dream a reality.

Remember That It’s Okay To Make Mistakes.

Steve Maraboli once said, “We all make mistakes, have struggles, and even regret things in our past. But you are not your mistakes, you are here now with the power to shape your day and your future.”

He’s totally right. Know what works and what doesn’t. Identify your strengths and weaknesses. The only way to improve your future is by learning from the past.

Let Go Of The Things You Cannot Control.

This is one of the most underrated life hacks. Now that I’ve stopped worrying about everything that I cannot control, I’ve found that it’s much easier to focus solely on what I can.

If worrying about something won’t change the outcome, what’s the point? There is none. Use your mental energy to concentrate on the things that matter. Focus on what you can do in the present moment to create a better future.

Create A Productive Work Environment.

It’s often incredibly difficult to focus when your workspace isn’t optimized for maximum productivity. So if you want to achieve your goals, you need to create a workspace that enables you to work for long periods of time.

Turn off the TV. Get some noise-canceling headphones, so you’re not distracted by other people’s conversations. Make sure you have a comfortable chair.

Basically, optimize your workspace to be ideal for working on any tasks that help you accomplish your goals.

Final Thoughts.

There’s an excerpt from Darren Hardy’s book, The Compound Effect, that perfectly sums up what I’m trying to say:

“Since your outcomes are all a result of your moment-to-moment choices, you have incredible power to change your life by changing those choices. Step by step, day by day, your choices will shape your actions until they become habits, where practice makes them permanent.”

Since I started focusing on the process, I’ve managed to achieve a lot more in my writing career than I ever thought possible.

My secret? I built my daily routine around the habits of extremely successful writers. For example, I write for several hours, read a lot of books, and do many other things that enable me to make a lot of progress exceptionally quickly.

When you focus on the process, instead of the outcome, it’ll quickly become much easier to achieve your goals. After all, every single one of your habits will be centered around making progress towards creating the future you desire.
