Summary

The web content discusses flying fish as a symbol of transcendence, highlighting their unique ability to glide through the air for significant distances and how this reflects the potential for all creatures to overcome their limitations.

Abstract

Flying fish are remarkable for their capacity to leap out of water and glide for up to 200 meters, an evolutionary trait that allows them to soar above their aquatic environment. The author views this behavior as an embodiment of transcendence, suggesting that these fish challenge the boundaries of their natural habitat, much like humans strive to surpass their own limitations. The article briefly references a previous work, "Travelogue 2: Haida Gwaii," where the author first mentioned the flying fish's inspiring ability. Additionally, the author encourages readers to engage further by joining Medium through a referral link, which supports writers and provides access to a wide range of stories.

Opinions

  • The author admires flying fish for their ability to "fly" or glide, seeing them as a metaphor for overcoming limitations.
  • Flying fish are perceived as a symbol for the capacity of all creatures, including humans, to transcend their inherent limitations.
  • The author believes that the flying fish's evolutionary adaptation to glide for distances is a notable example of nature's wonders.
  • There is an implied encouragement for readers to support the writing community by becoming Medium members, which also benefits the author.

transcending nature

Flying fish are unique creatures in that they evolved to leap out of the water and “fly” or glide for up to 200 meters (650 feet) at a time. I have always marveled at their ability to transcend their water-born nature and see them as a symbol for the capacity of all creatures (including humans) to transcend their limitations.

I initially briefly referenced this about flying fish in Travelogue 2. You can see the story here:
