Summary

The web content discusses the similarities between the art of flirting and the writing of haiku, both of which involve subtlety and suggestion to evoke emotions and interest.

Abstract

The article titled "Flirting and Haiku" delves into the parallels between the playful and suggestive nature of flirting and the concise, evocative form of haiku poetry. It suggests that both forms hint at deeper meanings without being overt, using gestures and words to spark interest and awaken the senses. The text illustrates this with examples of haiku that, while not adhering to traditional seasonal references, reflect the modern American style focusing on reflections and emotions. The author, Thalia Dunn, provides photographs and poems that demonstrate how haiku can capture the essence of flirting through carefully chosen words and imagery.

Opinions

  • The author expresses a personal enjoyment of flirting and acknowledges their own skill level without deterring from the fun of the activity.
  • Flirting is likened to haiku in its use of subtle cues, such as a smile or a casual touch, to convey interest, much like a haiku uses precise language to suggest a mood or scene.
  • The author believes that both flirting and haiku can awaken the senses and make one feel alive, highlighting their ability to deliver on the promise of an experience.
  • It is noted that the haiku presented in the article are not traditional in the sense that they do not include seasonal references but are instead reflective of the contemporary American approach to haiku.
  • The author suggests that haiku, like flirting, can be charming and elicit strong feelings with just a single well-placed word.

Flirting and Haiku

How are they similar?

I love to flirt. Doesn’t mean I’m good at it, but it sure is fun!

Flirting, like haiku, hints at something new without being too obvious, too blatant. A smile, eye contact for just a few seconds, and then looking away, a casual brush of the hand or touch of the forearm.

We all know those subtle signs to convey interest, to show a spark or potential of something more.

Isn’t that similar to haiku? The carefully chosen word to suggest a season, the well-placed adjective to quicken the senses, or an unusual twist to offer an element of surprise or invitation. Haiku and flirting share similarities easily! Do you see it?

Flirting and haiku each promise to deliver; which one really does? Both awaken our senses causing us to feel alive.

Beauty of haiku shows us the charm of flirting with one well-placed word.

Haiku offers us subtle hints eliciting strong feelings within.

Please note: These haiku/tanka are not the traditional type that includes a seasonal reference. These would be more in line with the current American haiku with the emphasis being on reflections.
