January Six Word Photo Story Challenge: “Self”
Greyscale or multi-colored, things never change.
That’s a bright red chiffon sari I am wearing in the photo with a matching blouse. This photo was taken in a photo studio in 1982. That’s 40 years ago. It is customary for families in our community to get their daughters married off early. By the time they’re 19, the search is on full swing to find a suitable “boy.” Of course, not everyone is lucky enough to find the perfect partner and these unfortunate people never hear the end of it from their own families.
Mine was no different. They started “looking” when I was 19 and looked frantically, because my mom was a single parent, and therefore, decreed that she should “fulfill her responsibility” by getting me married off. Ah well. Universe was on my side. And the very astrologers they relied on safely predicted that I would get married only after I turned 30. He he. The big day happened when I was 33. On 9 Feb this year, we’ll be celebrating our 25th wedding anniversary.
So — the photo — girls of marriageable age were expected to get an attractive photo taken. Several copies were made and circulated to the families of prospective grooms along with a “bio data” highlighting all the plus points.
Ugh! And after shortlisting a few grooms, they were invited with their families to the “girl’s” place where they were served sweets and favorites. In some cases, they would ask the girl to walk, talk, sing just to ensure that she didn’t have any disabilities. This happened quite a few times before choosing the “right” girl or boy.
Can you imagine? I went through it 3–4 times and acted rebellious. The family gave up after that. My career also took off and so did I.
And oh — these traditions continue to this day. Some things never change.
Thank you Mary Chang Story Writer for making me think of this crazy photo. I had a good time releasing a stream of profanity against these customs. 🙂 Love you!
