Five Totally Unique Thoughts

Small poems to remind you of life's everyday magic.

I’m a sucker for a good quote, snippet of wisdom, or a small poem that reminds me of the lessons that I like to follow in my life. When life gets busy it is very easy to forget about these teachings that I want to make a habit of. This is why I buy a lot of self-help books and quite often on the same subjects I have read about before just to help concrete these thoughts into my brain.

Years ago I picked up the book Totally Unique Thoughts by Mike Dooley. It is a small book full of little poems that inspire me to be the person I want to be. Below I have shared 5 of my favourites from this great little book.

“I’m through with pleasing everyone, I’m done with fooling me, it’s time I started living life, the way I want it to be.” — Mike Dooley

I’ve always wanted to be liked by everyone that I come across. I know it’s not healthy, and a lot of the time it backfires. Worrying so much about what other people think of me causes me to live my life the way I think I should rather than the way I want to.

Rather than doing what you feel everyone else wants you to do, set yourself free, allow yourself self to shine, and celebrate who you are. Remove the people from your life that you feel forces you to be someone you don’t want to be and surround yourself with people who have common values.

This little quote reminds me to be myself. If I truly want to live a life of happiness then I have to live life on my terms.

“It’s not the score Nor how often you win, But that you face the fears that lurk within.” — Mike Dooley

Don’t let fear stop you from doing the things that you want to do. Except that you are scared, and that at the start this is going to be difficult. But remember, walking was difficult at the start too. Falling down was scary. However, I am betting you didn’t give up on that. Knowing that something you want to do is scary and doing it anyway is how we grow outside our comfort zone.

I have discovered throughout my life that everything I have built up in my head to be scary, never really turns out to be so bad when I face those fears and push through them. Most of the things I think will go wrong never do and those that do happen are not as hard as I thought to conquer.

Face your fears and do it anyway.

“To dwell upon what might have been, Is perhaps the greatest sin.” — Mike Dooley

Living in the past prevents you from becoming the person you should be in the future. Should have’s and could have’s don’t help you in any way. They just make you regret the decisions that you have made despite the fact there isn’t anything you can change about the past.

You can however learn from the things you did in past days and use those lessons to become the person you want to be today. This might mean asking someone for forgiveness that you may have wronged at some point, or changing the direction of your life as you have discovered you made a wrong choice years ago and are currently heading down a path that is wrong for you.

You might be dwelling on thoughts such as where you might be if you had started something years ago, or comparing yourself to others that are doing that something you wanted to do earlier in life. Instead of dwelling on those thoughts, you could put that energy towards starting today. No matter how small the first steps are that you take, you will be much better off for starting rather than continuing to wait.

Which leads onto the next thought.

“All of time will wait for you as the night enfolds the day, But if you really want to get things done you had better seize the day.” — Mike Dooley

A great little quote and another one that springs to mind by the late Benjamin Franklin is “Don’t put off to tomorrow, what can be done today”. Essentially the longer you leave starting something, the longer until you achieve success at that something. What have you got to lose if you just start today? Take small steps to get you moving and keep on top of it every day.

I have learned that waiting for the stars to align before I start something is a complete waste of time. It is never going to be the perfect time to get going. I know I can learn to overcome any obstacle that I do come across while trying to achieve success. And in five years if you find you have failed at what you were wanting to do then at least you have given it a go, learnt some new things along the way, and you would have grown in so many positive ways. It’s much better than sitting on your couch in five years wondering where your life might be if only you had started back when you wanted to.

“Live, laugh, love, and have fun… Just a moment more, And your turn will be done.” — Mike Dooley

Sometimes we take life way too seriously. We only have a finite amount of days on this planet and each day we live is one day closer to the end. Life is way too short to always be taking things too seriously. Have fun with your life. Stop putting off doing the things that you enjoy just to achieve things you feel you should be doing. Surround yourself with people who make you happy. Celebrate being you.

Final Words

Over the years I have picked up a lot of Mike Dooleys books, and courses and love the wisdom he shares that reminds me how to live the life I want to.

Remember to be yourself, face your fears, rather than letting them prevent you from ruling your life. Seize the day, as today is all that matters. Don’t live in the past and most importantly enjoy every moment as we aren’t here as long as you think.
