Five Tips You Need to Know Before Starting a Side-Hustle

From someone whose hustling

I have a side hustle — well actually I have a few. All of them are profitable. Now they didn’t all start that way, and yes some are still more profitable than others, but to me, they are all worth it. Over time I’ve realized there are steps that can help make your hustle more successful.

Before we get any further let me say this — these tips aren’t going to make you rich and famous overnight. They are just tips, but if followed and executed correctly they can help you towards a more financially lucrative future.

Get Organized

Okay, stay with me. If you aren’t organized (and I mean type-A organized) in your current life you need to at least be that way in your work life. You need to be able to track your hours, money, invoices, emails, deadlines, etc.

In some cases, you may be working for another company and need to keep track of what’s happening at two separate jobs with bosses who will be very upset if you lose track of important documents.

In other cases, you may be your own boss which means it’s even more necessary that you know exactly what’s going on and what money/resources are going in and out. If you don’t, the only person you’ll have to blame if things go wrong is yourself.

Your side-hustle will only thrive if you can stay on top of the extra work you’re taking on. If you can’t, it will likely lead to more unnecessary stress than it’s worth.

Clock In

Your “normal” job has set hours you need to work right? Your side hustle should too. And I mean set hours when you’re on the clock — getting what needs to be done, done.

I don’t care what you do, but set your work hours and stick to them. Even when you’re tired, even when you’d rather be doing something else. No one ever said the hustle was 24/7 fun. It’s not, it’s work. So work.

If you can only give three to four hours, that’s fine but make sure you’re always getting those hours. Keep yourself accountable.

If you want to see any kind of financial growth you have to be determined.

Track Every Dollar

Track everything. Every sale made, every business expense, everything. This will help show you how profitable (or not profitable) your side hustle actually is. And it will stop you from going into side hustle debt. Yes, it’s a real kind of debt, that only people who don’t track their side hustle money go into.

Because guess what — if you track your money you’ll know how much you actually have to spend. My recommendation is to make a spreadsheet that is organized by day so you can keep track of day-to-day amounts even if it’s just a few dollars.

Focus on Growth

So remember the rich and famous success I mentioned earlier? It still won’t happen overnight, but you should be setting goals for the kind of success you know you can reach.

Always start your goals small and then make your goals bigger as you find more and more success.

If you’re trying to start your own business what do you want your sales to look like 30 days from now?60? 90? Layout a plan for how you’re going to make it happen and then adjust the plan as you make progress.

If you’re working for someone else how much income do you want to be bringing in? Where do you want that extra income to be going?

No matter what kind of side hustle you’re doing — there’s a reason you’re doing it. So make sure you have the right goals in place to keep you focused and on the right track.

Keep It Simple

You don’t need new clothes, business cards, a new website, etc. to get started, just start. If you want to be profitable tomorrow you have to start working today. All of those things will come later, but only if the work is getting done.

“It’s not about money or connection — it’s the willingness to outwork and outlearn everyone.” — Mark Cuban

I have said it a thousand times but I will say it again — you’re going to have to work, work a lot and work hard. I know there are a lot of articles that make side hustles seem like aimless fun that will make you money, don’t let yourself forget you’re hustling with a purpose.

You will only ever get out what you’re putting in. So if you aren’t seeing the results you want, check yourself. Keep it simple, do good work and you will yield good results.
