Five Quick Tips to Get Recognized on Medium
What I wish I would have known from day one of my Medium journey.
I’ve been on Medium for over a week now, I’ve somehow convinced over 100 people to follow me, so that makes me a Medium expert, right?
Yeah, it’s not that easy, is it? Luckily, I have done a little research and learned a few useful things in my short time here. So, if you’re feeling stuck, or not getting the response or followers you’re hoping for, then hopefully these ideas can help you!
In return, it would be fantastic if you would drop any advice you have in the responses to help me and other readers out!
- Write. I’ve seen an alarming number of new Medium members begging for followers that have only written one article, or worse, haven’t even written anything. Medium is a place to write, learn, and to interact. If you want people to follow you, write!
- Interact. One of the first things I look for when deciding to follow someone is how many people they are following. If they aren’t following many others, I’m not really interested. It’s a quick sign that they only want to publish content. That’s fine, they can use Medium however they want, but I would rather find a group of people that want to learn from others as well. Followers and readers come naturally when you are following, reading, and responding yourself.
- Formatting. This is the boring part, but if it isn’t done well, do not expect Medium to distribute what you are writing. Use photos, a catchy straightforward title that gives a reader a reason to click on it, and don’t forget about subtitles. I found this article to be quite useful in the beginning. Become an expert on Medium’s Distribution Standards.
- Membership. If you are like me, you despise spending money on monthly memberships. It seems like everywhere you go, a business is encouraging you to sign up for monthly services. However, if you want to find success through this network, you’ve got to become a member. It’s just too difficult to interact and really become a part of Medium while only being able to read a few articles a day. The best part about this membership is that you can eventually cover the $5 pretty easily once you are a part of the Medium Partner Program. Remember, long-term goals!
- Authenticity. Be you! Make it yours. It’s easy to tell when someone is writing from the heart, or just writing to get clicks. The best articles I’ve read are interesting because I feel like I was able to get a small glimpse into the life of the author. Do the same!
