Abstract

The author, Lucy, shares her excitement for upcoming summer projects aimed at refreshing her living and gaming spaces. She details her intention to cover her bright red desk with a chalkboard sticker, inspired by a clever desk design she found online. This project is driven by her desire for a change of scenery and the practicality of reversing the modification when needed. The second project involves acquiring a Roomba, affectionately dubbed "Nyoomba," to tackle the persistent issue of hair and crumb accumulation in her basement apartment. Lastly, Lucy decides to buy a mouse to improve her gaming experience, particularly for the game "Don't Starve Together," which she has recently started playing with friends. The article also includes personal anecdotes, such as her initial reluctance to paint the desk due to the complexity of the task and her previous reliance on a laptop's touchpad for gaming.

For three new projects

Rationale

My desk is glaringly red and honestly kind of jarring. You can see in these photos of my food that it’s really that bright of a red.

The story is that I inherited the desk it entirely free from the person who just abandoned it at the place I was moving into. Seeing that it was free, I didn’t complain and accepted my fate in all of its $0 cost.

Until I saw this desktop design:

It’s an MDF board screwed on to bookshelves and it’s honestly SO SMART. I’ve been getting a bit bored sitting at a glaringly red desk all day and then staying at that same desk all evening. I was ready to switch it all up.

Originally my plan was to paint over it, but fell lazy when I had to figure out what material the desk was and how to find the right paint that will stick. Google usually understands what I’m searching but this time “glossy surfae desk ikea” didn’t cut it and I had no answers.

With this option, I could just place the sticker on the desk and call it a day. When it comes to selling it when I move out of this college home, I can also theoretically remove the sticker without a trace. Theoretically.

Project 2: Pet Roomba that I’d name my Nyoomba

It’s been a long time goal of mine to own a roomba. This is because I absolutely despise vacuuming because I have thick, long black hair that forms hairballs “worse than dealing with shed dog hair.”

Disgusting TMI upcoming, but I am also absolutely the queen of dropping snack crumbs everywhere. More disgusting TMI upcoming, but living in a basement with a strong dehumidifier, I see a lot of dead, dried up critter bodies in my place.

A roomba was desperately needed. Clearly. Or at least a better vacuum than the hand vacuum that I was using.

Actually, I’ll just leave these here without an explanation for now and let you, the reader, piece it together.

Project 3: Don’t Starve Together

Since physical distancing measures began, I’ve reprised PC gaming, specifically for a game that I bought a few years prior and immediately abandoned: Don’t Starve Together. It’s a multiplayer game and so I persuaded a few of my friends to join me for game nights as a new online gathering activity, and it’s been a great bonding experience.

Edit Nov 8, 2020: The mouse actually already ran out of batteries, which makes me feel really guilty to be using a battery-powered wireless mouse when I have a wired mouse that doesn’t need me to purchase / discard batteries or splurge on a rechargeable set of batteries. Unfortunate.

Edit Mar 11, 2021: I ended up getting rechargable batteries! Problem solved.

You can follow my adventures here:

Could you believe that I’d been wandering around all of these games solely using my laptop touch screen and touchpad though? It’s not great for my wrists but I’ve been hanging in there.

Now that gaming has grown on me as a potential long-term hobby, I finally decided on investing in a mouse. So here I am.
