First Time for Everything
Firsts that might mean something to someone
First of all, I’d like to welcome you to my very first article about firsts. I don’t think there will be another one exactly like it since a second article would no longer be a first. If you know what I mean. I thought you might. Now, here’s some interesting and highly relevant trivia for you to digest about some fascinating food firsts.
Popcorn was the first food ever microwaved. Raytheon patented the first microwave oven on October 8,1945. https://www.rd.com/list/historic-firsts/
Flour was the first processed food. Oliver Evans invented a fully automated grain mill in Delaware in 1784. https://www.saveur.com/article/Kitchen/30-Food-Firsts/
Fast food is born when the McDonald brothers opened their drive-in burger joint in California in 1948. https://www.saveur.com/article/Kitchen/30-Food-Firsts/
There are an overwhelming number of food firsts so I decided to stop at three because I didn’t want to drone on and on about first foods. I think you get the point with just these three first food facts.
I’m thinking of a few times in my own life that were surprising firsts, not necessarily to do with food but just to do with life in general. There’s a first time for everything, even things that I never thought I’d attempt.
I didn’t used to be very open-minded, not at all. Over the years there’s been so many opportunities for firsts that I missed. But then I got older and smarter and started trying new things. Here are a few firsts that were surprising and completely out of character for me…
- QUILTING — HATING home economics in high school I was NEVER going to sew, EVER. But circumstances led me back to the dreaded sewing machine and quilting became a great hobby for several years. Trying quilting for the first time led to many hours of enjoyment for myself and others
- SHRIMP — Once a long time ago, I decided that I didn’t like seafood. This was confirmed when I tried crab at the insistence of a friend. So from that day until recently I never tried seafood again. It just so happens that my current husband likes shrimp. So I attempted to cook it for him, unsuccessfully at first but eventually I got it right. I smelled it and wondered to myself how it actually tasted. So I hesitantly bit into one for the first time and to my surprise it wasn’t too bad!
- SHOPPING — this was always frightening to me as I’ve had Social Anxiety Disorder for as long as I’ve been alive. But I decided to shop for clothes, on my own for the first time and I actually found it almost fun. Not quite, but almost.
First times — sometimes scary, most of the time difficult, usually surprising. I wonder how many firsts you’ve had that you remember with fondness? Maybe you’d like to share a story of one of your firsts in the comments of this story. It might even become one of your favorite firsts of all time! You never know until you try. Because as you know, there’s a first time for everything.
Thanks for reading this article. You can help me try some more firsts with a hot cup of coffee!
