This is the first article in a new series I’m doing that is called ‘First Album Reviews.’ In these pieces, I’ll be writing reviews of the debut albums of singers, bands, instrumentalists, etc. Many of the albums will be very old, but many of them will be more modern releases.

Even though I’ve liked Aerosmith for a long time and have even seen them once in concert, I’m not overly familiar with most of their music.

Sure, like most music listeners, I know and love most of their big hit songs. However, I don’t know their studio albums very well at all. Up until yesterday, the only ones I’d ever listened to in their entireties were Toys in the Attic from 1975 and Get a Grip from 1993.

I heard the band’s legendary song “Dream On” yesterday, and it inspired me to seek out the album it came from. I was a bit shocked when I discovered that it was from Aerosmith’s eponymous debut album, which was released in 1973.

How did they make such a fantastic song so very early in their career???

I wondered if there were other great gems by them from back then that I was unfamiliar with.

I gave Aerosmith a listen and quickly discovered that there were several great songs on it that I’d never heard before. I then listened to the album again. And again. And then a fourth time.

With each new listen, I became more and more impressed with the album. Here are five of my favorite songs from it. I never heard any of them before yesterday:

Make It

This is the opening track of the album — and it rocks! Singer Steven Tyler’s voice sounds fantastic. I also love the great guitar playing in it by Joe Perry. Kudos to whoever decided to make this the first song on the album.

One Way Street

Clocking in at seven minutes, this is the longest song on the album. There are some great, long instrumental jams in this one. I especially love the bass playing in it by Tom Hamilton.

Mama Kin

This is kind of a cheat on my part because I already knew “Mama Kin”— just not this original version of it. I first heard “Mama Kin” when Guns N’ Roses included a live version of the song on their great 1988 album GN’R Lies.

I loved that one then, and I still love it now — but the original studio version of “Mama Kin” from the Aerosmith album is amazing. Another great rocker from the band!

Write Me A Letter

I like this one a lot! My favorite parts of it are the vocals and background vocals, the harmonica playing by Steven Tyler, and the great drum work by Joey Kramer.

Walkin’ The Dog

This is a remake of a hit by Rufus Thomas from 1963. It’s got some awesome guitar licks in it from Joe Perry. This is the last song on Aerosmith, and I think it closes the album perfectly.

Here’s the entire Aerosmith album on Spotify:

All in all, I think this album is fantastic. Out of 5 possible stars, I give it…drumroll, please…4 stars!
