Fire-Breathing Foes in the Tombs of Terror

A ‘dragon heist’ fantasy fiction dribble

Image by the author using MidJourney

Hello! This piece of flash fiction is a response to Monday Mashup writing prompt #23, and will later grow from a seedling… I hope! More about that below.

Roznia glanced behind.

What’s taking that kobold so long?

She looked again at the green-and-gold firedrake below the trapdoor, and shuddered. Innocent… but petrifying!

And bad enough asleep. If it woke, she’d just die.

But time was pressing.

Roznia traced an arrow in the dust, then gingerly let herself down.

Thanks for reading! This “dribble” was written in response to Bradan Writes Stories’s Seedling Challenge:

It is also a response to the Kraken Lore’s fortnightly challenge, Monday Mashup, set by Jonathon Sawyer:

Tagging Sam W., who loves firedrakes, Sieran Lane, a fan of dragons of all kinds, Cathylouise, who was curious about the seedling challenge, and John Fanidis who liked ‘Tooooommbbsssss’ for the title. Perhaps you folks would like to have a go at the mashup, too?

Below is my scorecard (I overshot with the constraints 😅):

Main prompt:
#1 – Explore a character's phobia (dragons; protagonist's reaction to the little firedrake and overcoming it; the title) - 2pts
Constraints:
A unique writing method (dust) - 1 pt
The color ORANGE (ginger-ly) - 1 pt
A tired animal (the firedrake) - 1 pt
An unlikely sidekick (the kobold) - 1 pt
The color GREEN - n/a
The color GOLD - n/a
Literary Device:
An example of hyperbole "just die".
An internal monologue (line 2).
(I just did them both. Again.)
- 5pts
Bonuses:
This score box - 1pt
Hardcore prompt: Childlike innocence (innocent sleeping firedrake, small and therefore childlike) - 2 pts
Eligible for Seedling Challenge – 10 pts
TOTAL: 24

Btw, Medium is weird with word counts, it treats “green-and-gold” as 3 words. If (as is more standard) we treat this as one, the story comes to exactly 50 words.
