Finding Yourself in the Voices of Your Unconscious

this brain spins faster than my pen
giving voice to emotion, to history, to unconscious dreams.
the tension in my scalp, not unlike a braid pulled too tight, is eased.
as I speak my past into the recorder, the logjam of resistance weakens, the present emerges.
I write it out, perfecting each line, to expose the soft tissue of my soul.
I often begin writing by speaking into the recorder app on my phone. I don’t know if it’s because of my ADHD, but it solidifies the direction, and I don’t lose any of the ideas to forgetfulness as I type and think about timing and sentence structure.
Yesterday, I had a rather poignant experience when answering a challenge question: What is something you wish you could tell your younger self? My original plan was just to write, “Don’t do it.” but when I went to my recorder, what came out was so much more than that. It became the poem below.
The entire experience is what led to me write this poem. It was written out in longhand, which usually happens when I already have a direction.
So, if you’re ever stuck, try giving voice to your thoughts. You never know. :)
