Summary

The author recounts an encounter with a neighbor who is upset about his new car's design flaw related to the visibility of the Mercedes emblem when parking.

Abstract

In the article, the author describes a conversation with a neighbor who has recently purchased a new car. The neighbor is extremely dissatisfied with what he considers a "SERIOUS design flaw" in his new vehicle. The issue is that the Mercedes emblem on the back of the car is not as visible as the one on the front grill. This flaw forces him to back into his driveway to ensure the neighbors can see the emblem, which he finds inconvenient and frustrating. The neighbor takes the time to explain his grievance in detail to the author, who did not anticipate the severity of the problem from the neighbor's perspective. The article ends with the author providing options for readers to subscribe to his Medium stories, join Medium, and explore related articles, as well as a link to a humorously presented quiz and a tip jar for writers.

Finding Things To Complain About

Easy to do with some practice

My next-door neighbor was complaining this weekend, and I just happened to be close enough to him to become a part of that conversation.

He had just purchased a new car a week earlier, and he was furious at it already.

“This stupid thing has a SERIOUS design flaw,” he told me.

“I didn't realize how serious the problem was until I started driving it. It's ridiculous. It's so inconvenient, I can't stand it!”

I did not know him well enough to know “what is wrong?” was the exact worst thing to say to him. So he stopped to explain it to me in detail.

“When I drive home after work, I have to stop and back into my driveway!”

I expected him to elaborate about his transmission, how it parks or doesn't park, or how it's hard to see out the next morning when he backs out of his driveway, but must admit, I was not expecting how serious it actually was.

“The Mercedes emblem on the back is nowhere near as visible as it is on the front grill, so I will always have to stop and back in, if I expect the neighbors to be able to see it!”

Thank you.
