It’s the second day of 2023 and New Year’s resolutions abound. Most will fail (88% according to a study from the University of Bristol) and I believe the prime reason may be those resolutions aren’t big and meaningful enough.

Perhaps the ultimate resolution should be about your path in life.

Should you say Goodbye to Yellow Brick Road (the life path you’re on) you’re living and follow a new yellow brick road that’s ideal for you?

Life lessons in song and story

The lessons from the Wizard of Oz and Elton John’s song have very strong relevance for our life path and whether we should find a better way forward.

Ask yourself:

Just how happy, satisfied, and aligned with your life, are you?

Are your path, situation, and direction the right one for you? Was it ever?

Has the shelf life on your current path expired and it’s time for something new?

Determine this and all the typical resolutions of losing weight, being more successful, being a better person and the like will naturally follow.

Goodbye Yellow Brick Road has been interpreted as Elton and lyricist Bernie Taupin deciding the path they have chosen, is no longer the one for them.

So goodbye yellow brick road Where the dogs of society howl You can’t plant me in your penthouse I’m going back to my plough

How many of us have followed the Yellow Brick Road we thought at the time, rightfully or wrongly, was the one we wanted? Only to discover later in life, it isn’t the right road for us.

Call it the default life, the family footsteps, the low-hanging fruit, and something that seemed like a good idea at the time.

We all reach a point through a crisis or self-awareness when we question the life we’re living.

The Great Rethink

This awakening has become a huge trend across the globe and the pandemic accelerated it. So many people wonder, “What am I doing? There must be more to life than this”.

The Great Resignation was one manifestation of this trend. Now we have something even bigger: The Great Rethink.

Especially when we get “older” (let’s say 40+), we start wondering about our current life.

We wonder if there’s something more.

We wonder what we’re going to do with the decades of healthy life ahead.

We wonder how we stumbled onto a life path that’s not right for us

We wonder how we can earn a better living, and have it fit the life we want and who we want to be.

We wonder what our true purpose is and if we can have a life we’re passionate about.

In our youth, we learned. When we became adults, we were apprentices in life. Now that you are older and more aware it’s time to go pro.

When we get ‘older’ we reach the perfect time to reconsider, reimagine, revitalize and rethink our life and what we’re going to do with the decades of healthy, active, and enabled life we have available to us.

As I entered my “older” phase of life I made a resolution to determine what path I needed and wanted to be on. How could I make the years ahead relevant and fulfilling?

I found my new way forward which just happens to be New Way Forward. My purpose is to help others do what I did: Follow a new Yellow Brick Road that’s right for them.

I said Goodbye to Yellow Brick Road, found my new one and heeded the call from the Munchkins.

This leads us to the moral of the Wizard of Oz.

“Lions and tigers and bears, oh my!”

The Great and Powerful Oz is a very good wizard after all.

While the protagonists of the story wanted Oz to just give them what they needed, he knew they had to follow their own Yellow Brick Road of discovery, challenge, and self-validation to realize, believe, and ultimately manifest it in themselves.

We often seek a magical guru or method to give us the life we want. But life doesn’t work that way. It has to come from us.

It does so with time, effort, and a lot of focus. It’s self-discovery, reflection, and intention. It is challenging. But that’s part of the process and the way anything worthwhile in life is.

“I’ve got a feeling we’re not in Kansas anymore.”

So, you have a choice. Make little resolutions with little results or failures or resolve to consider saying goodbye to your old path and hello to your new way forward.

Because there really is a Yellow Brick Road that is ideal for each of us. Just ask Glinda, the Good Witch of the North:

“You’ve always had the power, my dear. You just had to learn it yourself.”

My purpose and passion in life have always been (as a news reporter and content creator) to share important and useful stories. The v3 of myself is New Way Forward. With it, I share how I am transforming myself at an older age to make the years ahead my most fulfilling and purposeful ever.
