Medium publications analysis

Find the best Medium health publications for your writing in 2024

I crunched the data to show how the publications are performing

Keep reading, and you’ll see that this diagram tells you everything you need to know | NASA + author

You’ve crafted your article, and now you must decide which Medium publication to pitch it to. Where should you start?

Keep reading because, by the end of this post, you’ll know.

But first, do we need to worry about finding a publication for our articles?

Do you need to place your article in a publication?

For the period I reviewed, just 19% of articles with a ‘Health’ tag were in publications. Have the majority got it right? Do publications matter?

Let’s see.

Articles in publications are much more likely to receive claps and comments | Author

I looked back over the archive of articles tagged with ‘Health.’

Almost half of the articles outside publications receive no claps, and almost three-quarters get no comments.

In contrast, all the articles I looked at in publications received claps, and more than 60% received comments.

That tells us that a large proportion of articles outside publications are ignored.

If we look at the number of claps and comments articles receive, the difference is again plain to see.

Articles in publications receive more claps and comments | Author

Don’t be put off by the graph. There’s lots of information here.

For articles not in a publication, half get one clap or less, and half get no comments.

Half of the articles in publications get 93 claps or more. Comments are still hard to come by, but half get more than one.

It’s clear, then, that if you want your articles to get views and engagement, you need them in a publication. But which one?

I was in the same position as you, wanting to get serious about my writing on Medium and unsure of the best home for it.

I found some helpful lists of Medium health publications, but it’s an ever-changing world, and none of the articles went into the detail I needed to help my decision-making. I decided to do a deep dive of my own.

Here’s what I found.

These results are a snapshot of the situation as it is now.

I found 18 active publications with a clear focus on health and open to outside writers. I also included six others that, whilst not health-focused, often contain health-related articles and are welcoming to new writers. These are useful comparisons and could be a good home for your writing.

Of course, things will change, and my sample was small. I counted the number of articles each publication posted in the last ten days and obtained more detailed stats from the most recent 20 posts.

Though the sampling is limited, it does give some helpful pointers.

The number of followers for each publication

There’s a wide spread in the number of followers, ranging from 55,000 for Invisible Illness to 11 for Wellspring Publications.

You should target the biggest, right?

Not necessarily. There are other factors to consider, like how active the publications are.

How active are the publications?

In my review, I found a number of publications with many followers and a great back catalogue of articles, but they had gone quiet, some for years. Those are not included here.

Of those currently active, there’s a broad range of activity, with Long. Sweet. Valuable. publishing 432 articles in a ten-day period, whilst Long COVID Connection, Menopause Matters, Mindful Mental Health and Penny Press published none.

There’s often just a loose connection between the number of followers and the publication rate. Contrast the sky-high followers of Invisible Illness with its more modest publication rate.

Should you target the most active?

Maybe not. I’m assuming you’d like people to read your article, and the best measure of that is engagement. So, let’s look at engagement.

The number of claps per article

The pattern changes significantly when we compare the number of claps articles receive in these publications.

You may be unfamiliar with box and whisker graphs, but they give us a great deal of information. Here’s a quick primer.

The graph shows us that, often, more narrowly focused publications, such as Long COVID Connection, Microbial Instincts and Menopause Matters, have more engagement than broader publications, such as New Writers Welcome. However, that’s not always the case — Alcohol is Not Your Friend, for example, is narrowly focused but has lower engagement.

Comments are more valuable than claps: they’re harder to squeeze out of readers! How do publications fare if we look at comments?

The number of comments per article

We have the same four leading the pack with the highest number of comments: Wise & Well, Long COVID Connection, Wellspring Publications and Microbial Instincts.

The height of the box and whiskers indicates the range.

For In Fitness and in Health, for example, you can be pretty sure your post will receive zero to six comments, whereas if you publish in Microbial Instincts, you have a 50:50 chance of getting between two and 31 comments with a one in four chance of getting up to 70.

Wise & Well is way ahead of the competition. It’s writers are mostly well respected with lots of followers.

In terms of engagement, Wellspring Publications punches above its weight. It’s only been around since late December 2023, so maybe it’s one to watch.

Bringing it all together

We’ve covered a lot of detail here, so let’s bring it together into a single chart you can stick to your fridge.

We’ll add one more essential consideration — the likelihood of you getting boosted.

Stick this chart to your fridge to help you choose the best publications for your health writing in 2024 | Author

This final graph combines four key pieces of information.

  1. More claps place a publication further to the right.
  2. More comments place a publication further toward the top.
  3. The size of the sphere represents the number of followers.
  4. Editors of publications listed in red have boosting privileges.

So, where should you publish?

There’s no one-size-fits-all answer to this question.

All things being equal, the closer to the top right of the diagram a publication sits, the more engagement your article is likely to receive.

However, it may also be more competitive to be accepted as a writer, and your article may compete for attention and boosts with deeply researched articles.

There may not be a clear answer here, but hopefully, it will give you a framework to think about the best fit for your writing.

To help with that decision, let’s finish with a look at each publication.
