HUMOR
Finally: The Ultimate Medium Clapping Rules
Created by a Medium Partner Program writer

There comes a time when every self-respecting Medium writer must write an article about Medium. This, fellow Medium writers, is the time for me.
The Question: How many times should you clap for a Medium Story?
I don’t know about you, but I struggled with this question for a while. At first glance, there would appear to be 51 alternatives: 0 claps, 1 clap, 2 claps, all the way to 50 claps.
But then it struck me: there are (almost) infinite choices! You could clap 1x now, 2x more in two hours, 4x more the day after… until you got to the maximum of 50. Or, you could clap 2x today, 7x tomorrow, 5x two weeks from today... Or, 9x five days in a row…
Having such vast options overwhelmed me. I needed someone to give me guidelines. Since no one would, I came up with my own rules.
My clapping rules
I give, all at once, either the minimum number of claps (0), the maximum (50), or a number that is a multiple of 12 (12, 24 or 36). Why 12? For a perfectly logical reason: my husband was born on 12/12/66, so 12 is my “go to” number.
As you can see, I’ve narrowed down my clapping choices from millions to just five: 0, 12, 24, 36 and 50 claps. Next decision: What story gets what number?
Fifty (50) Claps
I give 50 claps if the story’s pretty good and the clap count is low. I like to be supportive of fellow writers. If the story’s incredible, it also gets 50 claps, regardless of the clap count.
I often give 50 claps. It’s just so easy to keep pressing my index on the clapping hands until the claps stop at 50. Plus it’s free and it makes me feel so generous.
Zero (0) Claps
Only stories I deeply dislike get 0 claps. This has happened a few times only.
Twelve, twenty-four or thirty-six (12, 24, 36) claps
Here’s the one arbitrary component of my rules: my mood and random error determine if I give 12, 24 or 36 claps. The better my mood, the more claps I dispense.
Also, sometimes I mean to clap 12, 24 or 36 times and I accidentally keep pressing the mouse and get to 13, 25 or 37 claps. This happens more often that it should, unfortunately. I guess I become mesmerized watching the little clapping hands sparkle.
What to do in such cases? The rules are the rules, so I have to keep clapping until I get to the next allowed number of claps.
There you have them: my perfectly rational set of rules for clapping for Medium stories. Hope you find them helpful. Do you have your own clapping rules? If not, feel free to adopt mine.
Aside: When it comes to physical clapping, there are choices to be made as well. The variables are loudness, rhythm and duration. When I like something a lot, I clap twice as fast and twice as loud to magnify the effect. I also stop clapping last.
