Summary

Filter coffee has become a favorite among Generation Z, with its origins traced back to a method invented by Melitta Bentz in 1908, which involves filtering ground coffee beans to remove the grounds from the beverage.

Abstract

The article discusses the rise in popularity of filter coffee among Generation Z, noting a shift from traditional Turkish coffee to this modern brewing method. Filter coffee is characterized by the filtration process that removes coffee grounds, with the filter material varying from paper to metal to cloth based on the preparation technique. The flavor profile of filter coffee is influenced by the region where the coffee beans are grown, with Brazilian beans offering a soft, nutty taste and Kenyan beans providing a more acidic, tropical flavor. The concept of filter coffee was pioneered by Melitta Bentz, a German housewife who sought a solution to the problem of coffee grounds in her coffee. Her invention in 1908 has stood the test of time and remains a preferred choice for the younger generation. Bentz's simple yet effective method involved placing a piece of paper over a perforated bowl, and she went on to patent her design and establish a successful business that continues to operate today.

Melitta Bentz and its inventor filter coffee

Melitta Bentz was a true coffee lover. Melitta was uncomfortable with the grounds coming into her mouth while sipping her coffee. Bentz made small holes in the bottom of a bowl at home with the help of a hammer and nails. Then he placed a piece of paper over the holes in the bowl . Melitta Bentz, separated the bowl and coffee grounds from the coffee she prepared.

Bentz patented the filter coffee from the Imperial Patent Office. She continued to produce the coffee filters, which he had started to manufacture in a room of his house as handmade, from the factory she established with the profit she gained in the following days. This business with international studies is still operated by Melitta’s grandchildren.
