Fighting the Flu? Drink These 3 Homespun Remedies
Natural ingredients that boost immunity and help heal.
‘Tis the season for coughing, sneezing, and feeling like you were hit by a bus. Over 9 million Americans get the flu each year and it’s a throbbing, achy blow to the immune system. It runs its course for a week or two with little help from antiviral medicines.
Along with the physical pains, you’re forced to become a shut-in, which is worse than the sickness. Thankfully, there are natural ingredients that boost immunity and help with healing.
So, wipe your nose and take ease. These homemade concoctions prove to be formidable in the fight against the flu.
1. Magic 4 Ingredient Tea
This hot drink covers all the bases when it comes to calming miserable flu symptoms.
Its soothing Linden Blossom calms an upset stomach and helps lower the body temperature. Adding a fresh hot chili pepper will clear the sinuses and rid the body of viral mucus. The lemons bring vitamin C, an antioxidant that shortens illness duration and improves overall symptoms.

2. Fire Water
Last year, while book hunting at the thrift store, I picked up a resourceful cookbook called Coon Dan Family Cupboard. It has a plethora of recipes with canning and freezing tips. But it also has natural cleaning product recipes and home remedies.
In it, I found an awesome cold and flu remedy called Fire Water. It’s simple to make and hits symptoms hard.
Recipe:
- 1 cup boiling water
- 1/2 cup vinegar
- 1 teaspoon Cayenne pepper
- 1 teaspoon salt
Mix the ingredients until the salt is dissolved and take 2 tablespoons every hour. If you’re more of an internet surfer, you can find the recipe here, along with some added tips.
3. Rooibos Hot Toddy
David Zinczenko, author of the Eat This, Not That! Series, recommends Rooibos tea for sickness because of its immunity benefits. It’s high in antioxidants and free of caffeine.
A delicious and spicy version of this sweet red tea is the Rooibos Hot Toddy. Cinnamon adds a robust flavor to this toddy. Its antiviral properties are strongholds for the immune system while ginger relieves throat pain. The tangy citrus fruits carry B vitamins that support flu recovery. Topping this warm tea off with honey helps ease a cough.
Flu has to run its course, but that doesn’t mean you have to suffer through it. You can relieve even severe symptoms with these tasty home remedies.
