Fighting off Dementia in Old Age
Don’t let it conquer you
Dementia can become a problem for old people
Although it may not be possible to completely prevent mental problems such as dementia for all older people, there are some methods that can be used to fight against it. Dementia may not have to become a problem if more care is taken to keep the mind active even in later years.
There are people who have passed their 100th birthday whose minds are still alert and smart. They do not suffer from dementia and Alzheimer’s disease which affects so many older adults as they age.
It is most likely that these older people have been able to avoid dementia because they did not let their minds become idle or stagnant in their old age. They didn’t let boredom control their mind. They quite likely kept doing the things that made them think and reason.
Perhaps it was reading. It might have been writing. Maybe they watched game shows on television where they tried to answer the questions. They may have done cross word puzzles or other mind games which made them think.
Many older adults may play games on their computers or phones. Although some would claim that the games are a waste of time, they generally require some thought processes to be used. That is a good method of fighting against dementia.
There are prescription medications now that are claiming to work against dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. Some doctors insist that natural methods are more effective in keeping the mind sharp.
Some of the methods they recommend are: Learn a foreign language — even one new word a day; play a musical instrument for several minutes each day; do mind puzzles; read or listen to the news to keep up on current events; and eat healthy foods such as fruits and vegetables.
We could add writing because it is a good way to keep the mind active and alert. Many older people are reading and writing regularly. Those are good ways to help avoid being burdened in old age with dementia.
