Fighting Against Medium Writing Bots — Are we Losing?

Living with the reality of bots taking over the content-writing industry

Photo edited by me

Note that many things mentioned here are my speculations of what I think is happening on Medium and you guys can let me know whether it’s true on your side as well.

I’ve recently read through an article by The Silent Monk where he talks about bots taking over the writing industry. Am I scared? Yeah, which content writer wouldn’t be?

With the rise of AI intelligence, it’s becoming more and more obvious we are losing the writing game. It seems so obvious that Medium is now filled with AI robots. Not just AI writers, but also accounts as well.

They are Here

It seems true that almost 40% of accounts seem to be bots as The Silent Monk mentioned. Many of my notifications on users clap and follow are accounts that just started recently and have a very little following.

When sending them comments on their work, I don’t really receive any replies or even a clap back. So I really believe a number of AI on Medium are actually bots.

GET RICH QUICKLY!

Almost all these bots have articles related to get-rich-quick that are filled with information that seems like an AI would write. None of them had almost any personal touch or story to tell. Maybe this is why my page has been filled with this type of article given that my channel is closely related to finance.

With all these poor-quality articles, this is why I rarely read on Medium. Instead, I have found that Quora is actually a better platform to share content information and knowledge at.

This doesn’t conclude that all articles on Medium are rubbish. I would say that the ones on their trendy page are relatively good to read. They do provide high value and entertainment for me to read.

What I am Doing to Protect Myself

As more “users” enter Medium, I have learned to diversify more knowledge on other platforms as well to build a stronger network for myself. It is scary to know that one-day Medium may create an exact replica of my writing on Medium to take away my readership and traffic.

So to protect myself from the AI bot invasion, over the last few weeks, I have decided on a plan to diversify and grow my content writing income differently. Instead of depending on some income from Medium through MPP, I created accounts on Substacks and Quora to diversify my income. Also, I have built myself an E-book so that I earn passive income.
