Fight the urge to live your life with distractions

Technology and its gadgets are freeing up time for thousands of modern families across America, from smart appliances like fridges that tell you information about your food to robotic vacuum cleaners that vacuum your home with a set path that you program it to do. The list of smart home technologies is endless, making everyday tasks quick and obsolete for the average family household.

My question is what does this free time lead us to? I would say for most it leads us to consumption of video streaming, smartphones, social media, video games, and other forms of distractions. The ritual of one person washing a dish and the other person drying a dish is now taken away by a dishwasher.

What is life besides doing tasks with your family or loved ones; such as cleaning, cooking, talking, etc.? These small and mundane daily tasks we have with our families are at the end of the day what life is made up of. These moments of interaction and being alive are all we have in this life.

Now that machines are taking away these mundane tasks and freeing up our time, what are we supposed to do with the extra time? Most people can’t even feel or see the extra time because they have busy lives. When they are off from work they only go back home to do some quick chores and go back on their phones or computers to check emails from work.

After everything is said and done we have our screens to distract us from being in the cycle of a busy modern life. We are gaining free time from technology, but that free time is getting eaten up by work. It seems like we are becoming machines. Drive, work, chores, distractions, sleep, repeat.

There is a paradox being created where technology, which was intended to enhance our lives and create more free time, ends up consuming the very time it saved.

Our lives are too short to sacrifice precious moments with our loved ones and families.

Whether it is work, movies, shows, social media, etc. we must fight the urge to live our lives in distractions. We need to find a balance between our personal lives, work lives, and technology. Setting boundaries and prioritizing face-to-face interactions can help maintain a healthier lifestyle.

We must consciously decide how we want to allocate our time. Engaging with one another, spending quality time with friends, loved ones, and family, and participating in activities that bring happiness and fulfillment, can be crucial for a balanced and meaningful existence.

I know after a long stressful day at work you want to sit back and go on social media or watch a movie, and that is fine, I am not against that at all. I believe that we must have something that helps us relieve stress or helps our imagination, but all I am saying is not every day all day.

The challenge I am presenting is not in the presence of technology but in how we choose to integrate it into our lives. Being conscious and choosing the right balance of integrating technology into our lives can help us have a more meaningful existence and at the same time, technology can enhance rather than detract from the richness of our lives.
