But after some time he realized that anyway he is going to die, and there is no point in getting stressed about something that will come tomorrow. So he planned to live the last few days of his life with full energy. He planned for a vacation. Doctors warned him if he goes on vacation he will not be able to come back. You might have heard about the American author Helen Adams Keller. Who lived a healthy and happy 87 years life, being deaf-blind (I think being deaf-blind is a blessing in today’s society :p). Jokes apart, being deaf-blind if she can lead such a beautiful life, with all senses working perfectly fine, we can at least if not more, be as happy as her.

People who don’t know how to fight worry die early. — unknown

Here are a few simple and quick steps to get rid of your day-to-day stress. Ask these simple questions to yourself.

Will I worry about this thing after 5 years? If not, can I stop worrying right now?

This simple question can remove more than 50% of your worries. You might have faced the following scenario in your life. You would have got some idea in the back of your mind which, you think, can make you some decent amount of money. Now you will start multiplying and expanding your business just in your mind. At this point, you would have forgotten the original idea which was making you money, but you have started seeing yourself as a millionaire in the next 1–2 years and traveling the world with an abundance amount of resources, which is yet to happen.

You can see how our brain is a master in making things look big when it is not. Like that, most of your worries are not big. We help fuel them and make them big just by thinking over it again and again. So ask this question to yourself “Will I worry about this thing after 5 years? If not, can I stop worrying right now?” and move on.

What if my worries are BIG and that will impact my life even after 5 years?

I want to explain this part by telling you a small story. This is a true story of a young man who was suffering from duodenal ulcer. Doctors already said that there is no cure to the disease and there is very little time left for him. By hearing this, just like any common human being, he was also worried and stressed, and his health started degrading even more. But after some time he realized that anyway he is going to die, and there is no point in getting stressed about something that will come tomorrow. So he planned to live the last few days of his life with full energy. He planned for a vacation. Doctors warned him if he goes on vacation he will not be able to come back. He wanted to be buried in his home town. So he bought a coffin and asked the sailors not to throw his body in the sea and bring him back when he dies.

Now he was ready for the worst outcome. He started enjoying his final times, danced in the storm, drank till he was unconscious, ate whatever and whenever he felt like, and by the end of the trip, he gained an extra 90 pounds. Also surprisingly when he went to the same doctor, he was diagnosed with no sign of ulcer anymore. But if he would have kept worrying about his death without taking any action, then he might have died.

Now if you think your problem is smaller than this guy’s (in normal case it should be. Because there are very handful of things that are more stressful than death) then you can easily follow the same 3 steps he followed to get out of the dark side.

  1. Analyze the situation fearlessly and figure out the worst outcome that is possible: In this story, the young man was fearless enough to accept the worst outcome, that is his death.
  2. Mentally accept the worst outcome and be prepared for that: As the young man accepted the worst outcome he was ready with his own coffin to come back in.
  3. Work your way up and try to make situations better: Once you accept the worst, your brain will stop wondering and start working towards the solution.

Here are some fun facts.

  • 85% of the worries we worry about never happens
  • 80% of the rest 15% is not worth worrying
  • Which means 97% of your total worries are nothing but fear of your own brain

Bonus Tips:

  • Don’t allow yourself to get upset on small things
  • Count your blessings (Gratitude)
  • Keep yourself busy with constructive work
  • Think and Act cheerful: Your action and feelings are connected. So if you act like you are happy your feelings will follow that. Also, you can’t experience 2 extreme emotions at the same time. Like you can’t be both angry and happy at the same time. So try to act happy and cheerful even if you are not.
