Summary

The article outlines fifteen key behaviors and mindsets that distinguish individuals who are likely to succeed in the next five years from those who may not.

Abstract

The article "Fifteen reasons you will succeed (in the next five years) when others will not" dives into the characteristics that set apart individuals destined for success. It emphasizes the importance of focusing on a single project, embracing boredom as a catalyst for overcoming resistance, and prioritizing action over excessive planning. Successful individuals are portrayed as having clear goals supported by effective systems, a sense of urgency in their actions, self-awareness, and a truthful self-expression. They recognize the value of money and pursue various income streams, understand the power of compound interest in both financial and work output contexts, and maintain control over their internet usage. Learning through experience, managing emotional responses, and taking unreasonable steps to progress are also highlighted as success strategies. The article concludes by encouraging readers to embrace their vulnerabilities, take decisive action, and subscribe to a newsletter for further insights into mental strength.

Opinions

  • Success is more likely for those who dedicate themselves to building one thing rather than splitting their focus among multiple endeavors.
  • Boredom should be seen as a signal to work through challenges, not as a reason to start new projects.
  • Taking action is more important than extensive planning for achieving success.
  • A combination of clear goals and a robust system is crucial for success, as is a proactive approach to life and work.
  • Self-awareness and authenticity are valued over hiding behind societal masks.
  • Pursuing increased income is deemed more effective than solely focusing on reducing expenses.
  • Understanding and applying the concept of compound interest to work output is as important as its application to financial investments.
  • Resisting the distracting power of the internet is essential for maintaining productivity and focus.
  • Learning from experience through creation, testing, and adaptation is preferred over theoretical learning from books and blogs.
  • Emotional regulation, avoiding impulsive reactions, and taking considered actions are key to steady progress.
  • Success often requires actions that others may consider extreme or unreasonable.
  • Viewing oneself as the designer of one's life, rather than just a player in it, fosters a sense of agency and control.
  • Humility and the willingness to act despite feelings of embarrassment or vulnerability are important traits for success.
  • Commitment to doing whatever it takes to move from one step to the next is necessary for significant progress.
  • Recognizing the inherent challenges of success and taking deliberate action to overcome them increases the likelihood of achieving one's goals.

Fifteen reasons you will succeed (in the next five years) when others will not

Let’s not mess about and get straight into it…

  • You dedicate most of your time to building one thing. Others split their time between many things.
  • You understand that feeling bored is a sign that you need to work through and make peace with the resistance. Others see boredom as an indication to, yet again, start something new.
  • You do, while others plan.
  • You have a clear goal/s AND a system. Others have either or, or neither.
  • Your primary mode of action is to advance with urgency. Others are in either ‘ordinary’ or ‘retreat’ mode.
  • You understand yourself and speak your truth. Others will continue to strengthen and embellish their masks.
  • You understand the significance of money, and you will seek new means to increase income. Others see the pursuit of money as gauche, instead solely aiming to reduce expenses.
  • You understand how the concept of compound interest applies to your work output (as well as money invested) and will see the fruits of this accumulation after five years. Others will see little change in their results after this time.

  • The Internet has very little control over you. Others are seduced by its power.
  • Your source of learning is mostly through experience — creating, testing and adapting. Others learn primarily through books and blogs.
  • You take notice of your emotions, but you do not react — instead taking considered action. Others react to their feelings, like a boat in a storm.
  • To gain ground, you will do what others would consider unreasonable. Others will do what is reasonable and stay in one place.
  • You see yourself as the video game designer of your life. Others are just playing the game.
  • You are humble and take action even when you feel embarrassed or vulnerable. Others have pride and will not take action, for that puts their image at risk.
  • You do whatever it takes to get from one step to the next. Others will make allowances and make ground if they are lucky.

Final note: Winners know that the odds of success are stacked against us all.

Take action, do not coast, embrace pain, be obsessed with success, and your odds will greatly improve.

Success is in your grasp.
