Summary

A writer is conducting an experiment to compare the engagement and earnings of their serialized fiction story, "Matchmakers," on Medium versus Simily over two months.

Abstract

The author of a serialized fiction story titled "Matchmakers" is embarking on an experiment to determine which platform, Medium or Simily, offers better results for fiction writing. The experiment involves publishing the story simultaneously on both platforms and analyzing metrics such as "Reads" and "Claps" on Medium against "Visits" and "Snaps" on Simily, as well as comparing earnings. The author has decided not to submit any chapters to Medium publications to maintain fairness, as this is not an option on Simily. The results of this two-month experiment aim to provide insights to fellow fiction writers struggling to choose between the two platforms for publishing their work.

Opinions

  • The author acknowledges the ongoing debate about the viability of Simily as a writing platform, with some predicting its decline and others praising its niche for fiction writers.
  • There is an expectation that Medium may have an advantage due to its established user base and features like "Claps" and publications, which the author has chosen not to use to ensure a fair comparison.
  • The author expresses a personal interest in the outcome of the experiment, hoping to shed light on the better platform for fiction writers.
  • A shout-out is given to Rodney Goodall, who has compiled a list of serialized web novels on Medium, indicating a sense of community and mutual support among writers on the platform.
  • The author invites readers to consider an AI service, ZAI.chat, as a cost-effective alternative to ChatGPT Plus (GPT-4), suggesting a preference or endorsement of this service.

Fiction Writing: Medium vs. Simily

I’m putting both platforms to the test to see which provides better results.

There is a great debate right now if writing on Simily is worth it or not. I’ve seen an array of comments claiming that Simily is going to die out soon while others insist that it fills a gap where Medium lacks: Fiction.

Torn, I decided that I was going to do an experiment and see the results myself.

To do this, I am going to publish one of my serialized fiction stories on both platforms and on the exact same days. Today, I’m officially kicking off the experiment with my Romantic Comedy, Matchmakers.

I figure that I’ll give it at least two months before I analyze the results to give it a fair assessment. At the conclusion, I’m going to compare:

  • “Reads” (Medium) :: “Visits” (Simily)
  • “Claps” (Medium) :: “Snaps” (Simily)
  • Earnings

To keep it as fair as possible, I’m not going to submit any chapters of Matchmakers to any Medium publications. Since I don’t do it on Simily, I won’t do it on Medium either.

It will be interesting to see the results! Perhaps, I can shed some insight to help my fellow-fiction writers help make their decision where to publish their work.

Wish me luck!

Shout out to Rodney Goodall who has compiled a list of serialized web novels that exist on Medium if you are interested! He also has one himself called “Hells on Earth.
