Few Thoughts on My Writing Journey

“Sometimes it’s the journey that teaches you a lot about your destination”.- Drake

This is not my niche. Having spent 1 year plus on Medium, I thought to pen down a few. I have written consistently on this website since the pandemic hit us. It started out of boredom and has grown into a major preoccupation. Most times, I write based on inspiration. Other times, I follow writing prompts, though this is rare when compared to the former. Some other times, I write ‘cause something is tugging at me within.

Perks: It’s nice to see your thoughts come to life and your expressive capacity.

I have made a number of observations plus best practices. A few of them are:

  • Using simple sentences enough for a 4th/5th grader to understand
  • Poor spelling, grammar, and structure take away the joy of reading
  • Editing is as important as writing the first draft
  • Sometimes, it’s okay to allow the article to ‘stew’ before hitting the publish button.
  • Originality matters
  • Referencing matters
  • People complain about clickbait but still fall, victim to or perpetuate it.

Other observations I have made are:

  • Your writing style won’t speak to everyone because people’s makeup and interests differ
  • Not all the writing and grammar software will work for you.
  • Your love for writing will keep you going much longer than it takes to make money on the platform
  • As a follow-up to the point above, making money is still an incentive!
  • People reading and interacting with your work is another incentive.
  • Having a schedule and the best time to write works, but is not the same for everyone[obviously]
  • One’s writing doesn’t stay the same. It changes with time and sometimes that change is subtle.
  • Breaking even on Medium is hard.
  • It’s okay to let an article stew before hitting the publish button
  • A writer who does not show up every day might just mean that life is happening elsewhere!

Some Other Things I Think That Work

  • As mentioned earlier, I think inspiration plays a huge role. I also think having an interesting life helps to craft stories. Equally, as long as you can craft stories from an uninteresting life, that works as well.
  • Being observant is a recipe for lots of stories
  • Discipline is key
  • Making notes of your ideas as they come is helpful, especially if memory fails you often
  • Writing breaks are significant.
  • Self-care matters a lot

One Thing I Don’t Think That Works

Forcing oneself to write every day; how do you force inspiration? What happens when you need breaks or are you hoping to burn out?

I never thought I would write about writing, but I got quite reflective about my journey, and here am I. What’s your journey been like?

Thanks, Jason Edmunds.
