You’re planning your first trip with your Airstream.

You feel excited, but you may also feel pretty intimated too. There’s a lot to learn towing an Airstream for the first time.

You want to feel prepared, but you also want to find time to relax during your Airstream experience.

Having rented an Airstream last summer and now purchasing one this fall, I have gathered all the tips possible.

Use this advice for your first trip hauling your Airstream.

Do an Airstream trial run in your driveway.

Get familiar with your new travel trailer. Explore the space.

Before going anywhere, use your driveway as the first official overnight camping stay for you and your family.

My family fully intends on spending a couple of nights in our Airstream Basecamp before we decide to officially go camping away from the house.

Our kids can hardly wait to have a new lounging space to hang out in.

Take inventory of what you need inside your Airstream.

Pay attention every time you find yourself going into the house for something. Do you have all the basics before taking off for your first Airstream trip away from home?

Some of those basics include:

  • Sheets
  • Towels
  • Plates
  • Cups
  • Cooking Utensils
  • RV-friendly toilet paper
  • A journal for the family to write about every adventure

Ok, the journal is a nice-to-have, but it’s a great tip I gained from other Airstreamers traveling with their family. Take a journal and every time you go on a trip, have everyone write something they liked most.

You will have a book filled with memories when it’s full.

Don’t forget all the Airstream attachments and outdoor gear too.

Practice hitching and unhitching in the driveway. Do you want to invest in purchasing a backup camera before you leave?

It’s a great time to be practicing those hand signals and deciding on terms you and your partner will understand when hitching your Airstream. Communication will be key to making it a smoother process.

You won’t want to forget the camping chairs, outdoor grill, and marshmallow roasting sticks. If you have kids, maybe you’ll want to take their bikes, scooters, and helmets too.

It’s great to make a list both for the items inside and outside your Airstream that you’ll need for your first trip. Doing a trial run in the driveway helps you get prepared.

For your first overnight trip, pick somewhere close to home.

What is it that you want to do for your first trip in your Airstream? Is it important to be by water or close by to the woods for some hiking?

This will help determine if you want to be near a lake, a state or national park perhaps, or a comfortable family-friendly campground.

Recreation.gov, Hipcamp, or Campendium are excellent sites to check out to get reservations near you. You can also start by doing a google search to get some ideas or follow Airstream groups on social media.

Campgrounds with power, sewer, and water hookups are highly recommended for your first outing.

It’s important to gradually warm up to the idea of camping off-grid. No need to push it for your first or maybe even 4th trip out. It’s good to get used to your trailer and where everything is located before putting pressure on yourself to camp without hookups.

When you determine your location, make sure it is a pull-through spot as well. No need to make it harder on yourself or your partner trying to back in your Airstream.

For our first trip out with a Basecamp, it made a huge difference when we had a pull-through spot. It was much easier than having to back in.

Book enough time away so you don’t feel like you are constantly setting up camp. If you only go a couple of hours away and take a 3-day weekend, you can give yourself some time also to relax and enjoy the experience.

Your first time hauling your Airstream away from home you’ll learn a lot, but you also want to have some down time too.

Review your travel route a few days before leaving with your Airstream.

Are you giving yourself enough daylight time once you arrive to set up?

You need to arrive at least 2 hours before sunset. No one wants to try setting up camp for the first time in the dark. If you are having to set up in the dark, those headlamps are incredibly helpful.

Choose a route that is well-traveled with wide lanes and no overhead bridges that are impassable with your travel trailer. Look at a map and satellite views of the roads you will be using before you leave.

It helps to get an idea of the possible problems on the road before being surprised too much with your Airstream in tow.

Your first Airstream experience will be a memorable one. You want to be excited, but you also want to feel prepared too.

It’s normal to feel anxious hauling your Airstream on your first trip. Using these tips hopefully will make it easier.

This will likely be the first of many Airstream adventures in your future. Remember to stop and enjoy the experience.
