Fear What! — September Writing Prompt on Engage: ‘Fears Kill Dreams’

Some of us are so busy fighting life and the hopelessness that plagues our world, that we unconsciously deny FEAR space in our lives.

What are your fears?

September Writing Prompt on Engage: ‘Fears Kill Dreams’

Show me what you fear.

What is Fear?

Google says: “an unpleasant emotion caused by the threat of danger, pain, or harm.”

I have been playing around with this in my head for hours and still am unable to come up with something powerful and strong.

This is my best anyway.

Fear enters this world with us, and we are unaware of its presence until life alerts us, sometimes painfully. It will leave with us, and we will be aware, life doesn’t have to notify us.

It can be used as a weapon or a tool. Knowing when and how to use it, determines life or death. Failure or success. Victory or defeat. Pain or pleasure. Love or hate. Cruelty or kindness. And this can go on and on.

As children, with the help of innocence, and child-like curiosity, all of us fear something as life teaches us the difference between right and wrong. As we age, depending on how we live our lives, and take care of our bodies, minds, and souls, fear becomes a permanent resident or a temporary visitor.

How we handle our fears also determines how it impacts our lives and the lives of the ones who rely on us. Our actions, choices, and decisions can give fear power over us. Or show us how to disable and control our fears.

At my age, I have seen so much, that I hardly fear anything. When I was younger, living, tasting, and seeing poverty, my determination to slow it down was stronger than my fear of anything and everything. I was aware that poverty is a personal struggle. Only I could slow it down for myself and my generation.

I intend to!

The pain of hunger is not something you want to stay with you.

Poverty limits and sometimes denies you your ability to be who you want to be. Along with your hopes, dreams, wants, needs, and anything else you need that can help you to slow its cycle down. That is not a feeling you want to hold on to.

Not being able to enjoy the basic necessities of life simply because your parents didn’t make the right decisions, is not a feeling you want to follow you around.

Going to school hungry and being forced to learn on an empty stomach. That kind of pain you don’t want to pass on to your generation.

Being shunned, criticized, and demoralized because you are so poor, your parents can’t afford to buy textbooks. So, the teacher forced your classmates to share their books with you. That level of shame and pain sticks like the hair on your body while someone uses a tweeter to pull them one by one.

Witnessing the suffering of children, because someone forgets to use a condom, can tear a heart apart.

Living in a world where you know that your dreams are impossible, isn’t somewhere you want to stay.

In a world where hopelessness is a permanent resident, you want to move, but can’t.

A world where a fight for life begins at birth and never stops until you die.

A world where many deaths could be avoided.

A world where talents and brilliance in children are forced to remain dormant.

WITH ALL THIS HELL FACING ME, DO YOU THINK I HAVE THE TIME OR ENERGY TO ACCOMMODATE FEAR?

Life denies some of us room for fear. We are so busy fighting life and the hopelessness that plagues our world, that we unconsciously deny fear the space and life it needs to grow and harm us.

So, it ends up being afraid to enter our realm.

After we survive, we find ways to make failure and other life-threatening elements fear us. Simply by making our best a habit. When we do our best all the time, failure will fear us. Your best will beat failure and fear.

I am a coward who unconsciously denies fear space and time to grow and thrive. — Annelise Lords
