FEAR OF THE UNKNOWN
There are many uncertainties plaguing us in our daily lives. These at times, mocks our efforts at planning and delivering results. However much thought, care and precision one adopts in ensuring the smooth running of our sails in life, we become flatly helpless in the light of these uncertainties. Thus they have been inevitably accepted by us as part and parcel of our existence not to be denied or questioned and oftentimes even taken advantage of for petty benefits. In fact, they are better known in phrases coined to their glorification. Phrases like “unforeseen circumstances “ “circumstances beyond our control” and in legal parlance “An act of God”. It is an unforeseen circumstance when that smart, capable and most reliant Personal Assistant to the Manager entrusted with the sole organisation of the review meeting with the company’s biggest client takes ill on the eve of the meeting. Culminating in a monumental flop of the meeting, loss of the client, necessitating downsizing, major cuts on employee pays and allowances, leading to the withdrawal of that child from that private school, to public school, cancellation of that end of year vacation and so on and so forth. The list could go on and on and with one unforeseen incident begetting more and more. When it comes to “ circumstances beyond control” what better instance than the novel coronavirus pandemic and the year 2020. Which made a big joke of the hitherto wild spread campaign on Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) otherwise termed; vision 2020 (whatever happened to that). The pandemic reared its head in the most unexpected of ways with far-reaching consequences. Further buttressing the uncertainties and man's inabilities when faced with the outright unchartered sea and never seen before challenges in life. And then “an act of God” could be in the form of uncertainties resulting from natural elements; earth (earthquakes), Air (hurricanes, tsunamis, cyclones, tornadoes), fire (volcanoes), water( flood), and in the natural composition of man; for example, turning blind, deaf or mute. Of all these uncertainties the effects of these are the most damaging and nearly irreversible of all, at times. It exposes vulnerability and is the most humbling factor in the life of man. The story of the Titanic need not be retold here. Time and time again the course of a man's life, changes. Becoming complex or easier as the case may be, not necessarily as envisaged but in surprising ways. With each stroke of fortune, positive or negative the best of man is revealed. The optimist only sees greater opportunities and tailor uncertainties to suit their existential needs of survival. Just like in a game of chance, when you speculate you either win or lose but if you refrain from speculating you get neither outcomes. Hence, the option of winning is enough to spur on this category of people and they make it through life easily, seemingly without much difficulties. For the pessimist, on the other hand, they are the “life itself is uncertain” category hence, the pervasive idea or mentality amongst these individuals that less is enough, tomorrow might never be, so today is all you have got. Thus when hit by waves of uncertainties, they recoil in their shells and find it hard to go on. They keep reliving the blow and become lost amidst the chaos fearing more than ever; life itself. Uncertainties or not, we must always be alert for opportunities, keep planning and executing and living the life. We must understand that fears are valid but succumbing is what makes it a disaster. Therefore we must fear, less, and learn to accept the unexpected as the highlights of our life journeys. Preempted or not, bitter experiences make for better posterity. Thus, we must always remember to make out room for fallback options and if still overcome, just keep making lemonades with the lemons life throws at us! Perhaps then the strength of our will and consciousness will come together to make the unforeseen, the unknown that we fear, only but heaven overflowing with milk and honey that must first blow up to facilitate a gateway and admission to pleasures never seen before.
